Job DescriptionSyracuse University is seeking an experienced and dynamic professional to serve as Outdoor Recreation Manager. Under the supervision and direction of the Assistant Director, this position will manage outdoor recreation program areas that include seasonal outdoor adventure trips, a cross‑country ski & snowshoe center, outdoor equipment rental operations and various other recreation programming that helps to promote and strengthen the larger departmental, unit, division and university goals.
This role combines strategic program development with hands‑on management and supervision of facilities, student staff, and integrated programming that supports the Barnes Center’s holistic wellness initiatives through experiential and outdoor recreation opportunities.
- Bachelor’s degree in recreation, outdoor education, management, human development or another relevant field. Master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum two years of progressively responsible experience interacting with outdoor recreation programs and facilities.
- Experience with college / university outdoor education or recreation programs and facilities.
- Demonstrated success in the training and supervision of student staff.
- Demonstrated knowledge of outdoor recreation risk management planning and execution.
- Excellent planning, organizational, time management, supervisory, conflict management skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with a range of students and staff from diverse backgrounds.
- Experience developing and delivering student programming utilizing an experiential methodology.
- Working knowledge of and ability to use, maintain and repair a variety of outdoor equipment.
- Possess current First Aid / CPR certification.
- Possession of current driver’s license with clean driving record.
- Preferred Skills/Certifications.
- Wilderness or Remote First Aid / Wilderness First Responder certification.
- American Canoe Association ( ACA ) Level 2 or 3 certification.
- Leave No Trace Instructor certification.
- Provide supervision and management of a comprehensive outdoor adventure trip program. Manage outdoor trip logistics with various internal partners and external vendors to negotiate and secure services by establishing and/or maintaining relationships through email, phone and in-person meetings.
- Manage participant registration, program development and risk management aspects of the outdoor adventure trip program.
- Assist Assistant Director for Outdoor Recreation with administrative procedures related to the outdoor recreation program such as contracts and agreements, invoices, insurance requests. Communicate with participants as well as vendors and facility contacts to ensure that all parties are aware of program details, changes or relevant information.
