Do you have a passion for working with communities and helping people connect with nature? Birmingham Ranger Service plays a key role in caring for and championing conservation across the city’s parks, open spaces and nature reserves. As the UK’s first accredited Nature City, Birmingham is delivering its ambitious City of Nature 25-Year Plan
, and our Parks and Green space Service is entering an exciting period of transformation and growth. Working at the heart of our communities, our Rangers help protect, enhance and bring Birmingham’s natural spaces to life for residents and visitors alike.

We are looking for suitably qualified and experienced people to complement the existing Birmingham Ranger Service and help care for Birmingham’s green spaces.

About the role

As a Ranger, you will play an important role in protecting, enhancing and promoting Birmingham’s parks and open spaces. Working across the city, you will use your knowledge and practical skills to support the conservation, management and enjoyment of our green spaces.

The role includes:

  • enhancing biodiversity and supporting nature recovery across parks and open spaces
  • carrying out animal husbandry and habitat management tasks
  • supporting, training and inspiring volunteers and students
  • applying practical land management techniques to support green and blue infrastructure
  • using specialist tools, equipment and professional knowledge to deliver work safely and effectively, helping Ranger Services achieve key service and city priorities
About you

We’re looking for people who care deeply about nature and enjoy working with the public. You’ll have experience in conservation or environmental work, confidence in leading groups whilst promoting environmental awareness and park resources, and the ability to communicate clearly and positively. You’ll be organised, proactive, and comfortable working both independently and as part of a team.

You’ll also bring:

  • Knowledge or qualifications in an environmental field (NVQ Level 2 or equivalent).
  • Experience working with volunteers, community groups, or young people.
  • Strong organisational and IT skills.
  • Flexibility and open to working outside.

A full, valid driving licence is essential.

There will be a requirement on occasions for out of hours attendance at meetings e.g. Ward Committees, Friends Groups and other user groups. This is also likely to include attendance at various events on parks.

Ranger Service staff currently work a weekend rota. This requirement is fully covered in the rate of pay indicated. Ranger Service staff also work 8 out of 12 Bank Holiday days for which additional payment is claimed. Ranger Service Hours are annualised to 36.5 hrs per week working pattern split is; 9.30am – 4.30pm winter (25 weeks) 9.30am – 18.00pm summer (27 weeks).
