Senior Genomic Data Scientist – 2 Year Fixed‑Term Contract (Adult Population Genomics Programme)

Genomics England partners with the NHS to provide whole‑genome sequencing diagnostics and to enable genomic health care and research. We are establishing the Adult Population Genomics Programme (APGP) to sequence 150,000 adults, integrate pharmacogenomics, and develop population‑level precision medicine.

Job Description

We are hiring a Senior Genomic Data Scientist to lead pharmacogenomics‑focused analytical work. Responsibilities include designing studies, evaluating and benchmarking technologies, developing and validating analysis workflows, collaborating with bioinformatics engineers, and generating actionable insights from large‑scale genomic and health data.

Responsibilities
  • Contribute to study design and planning from a statistical perspective (power calculations, sample size, outcomes modelling).
  • Assess and benchmark whole‑genome sequencing technologies and bioinformatics tools (alignment, variant calling, quality control, pharmacogenomics and risk prediction).
  • Collaborate with bioinformatic engineers on data‑processing pipelines and impact assessment.
  • Conduct custom computational analyses on WGS datasets.
  • Research scientific literature, identify novel analytic approaches, and disseminate findings via papers, white papers, and conferences.
Qualifications
  • Ph.D. (or equivalent) in Genetics/Genomics, Statistical Genetics, Genetic Epidemiology, or Bioinformatics with a focus on human genomics.
  • Experience in human germline DNA analysis in a pharmacogenomics context, with additional expertise in rare‑disease genomics, polygenic risk prediction, population genetics, or complex loci (e.g., HLA/KIR).
  • Hands‑on expertise with whole‑genome sequencing, haplotype phasing, variant interpretation tools, and relevant databases.
  • Proficiency in programming (Python) and statistics, experience with cloud‑scale or high‑performance computing, and understanding of experimental design.
  • Track record of contributing to genomic research projects, including publications, presentations or large‑scale initiatives.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, able to explain complex concepts to non‑technical stakeholders and drive automated analytic workflows.
Desirable Skills
  • Leadership experience in multi‑disciplinary projects, chairing meetings, and influencing decision‑making.
  • Ability to inspire teams, deliver on deadlines, and make data‑driven strategic decisions.
  • Excellent analytical and reporting skills.
  • Prior experience in highly collaborative, cross‑disciplinary environments.
Contract & Compensation

2‑year fixed‑term contract. Salary from £62,000. Cover letter and explanation of alignment with role required.

Final date to receive applications

Monday, 12 January 2026.

Benefits
  • 30 days holiday + bank holidays; additional leave for long service; optional remote working abroad up to 30 days per year.
  • Flexible working arrangements; enhanced maternity, paternity and shared parental leave.
  • Defined‑contribution pension (up to 10 % double match);
    Life Assurance (3 × salary);
    Give‑As‑You‑Earn scheme.
  • Learning budgets; training and certification support; professional subscription reimbursement.
  • Employee recognition and referral scheme.
  • Subsidised gym membership; free Headspace account; employee assistance programme; eye tests; flu jabs.
