Purpose

It is the mission of the Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps to “lead our nations back to cultural and ecological well-being.” The Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps has offices in Acoma, Albuquerque, Gallup (Navajo Nation), Zuni, and Hopi. Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps serves local Indigenous communities in the regions we operate.

The National Park Service preserves unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations.

  • The purpose of the National Trail System is “to provide for the ever‑increasing outdoor recreation needs of an expanding population and in order to promote the preservation of, public access to, travel within, and enjoyment and appreciation of the open‑air, outdoor areas and historic resources of the Nation…”
  • “National historic trails shall have as their purpose the identification and protection of the historic route and its historic remnants and artifacts for public use and enjoyment.”
  • The purpose of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail is to commemorate the 1804 to 1806 Lewis and Clark Expedition through the identification; protection; interpretation; public use and enjoyment; and preservation of historic, cultural, and natural resources associated with the expedition and its place in U.S. and tribal history.
  • The purpose of the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail is the identification and protection of the historic route and its historic remnants and artifacts for public use and enjoyment.
Description of Duties

Native Lands, National Trails (NLNT) project is a collaboration with the Partnership for the National Trails System, Native Land Digital, Bureau of Land Management and Ancestral Lands Conservation Corp. NLNT will inventory and map recreation amenities on Tribal lands to enhance opportunities for Tribal members and the visiting public. NLNT will collect and develop geospatial data for display on digital platforms.

The intern will receive training in GIS, National Trails, Indigenous and ethical research practices.

Individual Placement (IP) will work directly with Trail Planner at Anza NHT and Tribal Liaison/Cultural Anthropologist at Lewis and Clark NHT, gaining insight and assisting with tasks. In‑person travel will occur for training, planning, and mentorship. IP will interact with other team members and attend staff meetings. IP may conduct informational interviews virtually and in person, and may collaborate with GIS interns and network in the National Trail System GIS community.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Conduct research and organize information related to Tribal recreation, parks, and tourism for a determined list of Tribes along both NHTs.
  • Perform internet research focused on Tribal websites to identify recreation amenities and relevant departments and contacts.
  • Organize information in a database.
  • Conduct outreach to traditionally associated Tribes of Anza NHT and Lewis and Clark NHT.
  • Conduct outreach with Tribal recreation/tourism contacts by email, telephone, and/or video calls.
  • Conduct in‑person site visits with Tribal contacts as time and budget allows; collect field information (GPS data, photos, etc.) where agreed.
  • Record and organize information in database.
  • Create geospatial product(s) illustrating Tribal recreation amenities along Anza NHT and Lewis and Clark NHT and projects identified with Tribes.
  • Use data collected and stored in database to create GIS data and final deliverables in a mutually agreeable form useful for Tribes, Anza NHT, Lewis and Clark NHT, and the public.
