BRIEFJOB DESCRIPTION:
This position will work within multiple programs at the Department to provide field and data collection support. The primary duties are based within the Recreational Fish Program for about half the year and include:
- Conducting phone and statewide dockside interviews of recreational fishing charter vessels.
- Entering associated data, performing database entry and quality assurance checks.
- Preparing annual reports and updating the state directory of fishing charter vessels.
When not working under the direction of the Recreational Fish Program, this position will support monitoring and assessment efforts in other programs, including the scallop and lobster programs. Depending on program needs, representative duties may include:
- Interviewing commercial scallop harvesters during the fishing season.
- Participating in onboard vessel work during contracted dredge surveys of scallop harvest areas.
- Performing suction sampling as a SCUBA diver for the fall/winter Lobster Settlement Survey.
- Assisting with additional field surveys (e.g., Larval Lobster Survey) and laboratory projects within the Bureau of Marine Science.
This position has a substantial field component and requires travel throughout the State year-round. This role also requires the ability to make interview calls outside of typical working hours. Some remote work may be available with supervisory approval.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES PREFERRED:- Ability to communicate clearly. This includes the ability to maintain an effective working relationship with industry members.
- Strong technical writing and database management skills.
- Ability to work and prioritize tasks with limited supervision.
- Ability to work on occasion outside a typical 9-5 schedule.
Intermediate education, training, and/or experience in the compilation and summarization of scientific field and laboratory data including coursework or demonstrated experience in natural resource science, management, technology, laboratory, or field work.
Preference will go to candidates with:- Experience working with commercial or recreational fisheries, or that hold a SCUBA certification with a documented history of drysuit diving.
