Data Scientist
Researcher (Temporary) – University of Washington
This temporary research position is located in Seattle, Washington and is part of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) within the University of Washington. The candidate will work on the Brain, Back Pain and Other Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSKs), Injuries, Renal, Respiratory, Diabetes, Dental, Substances, Sensory and Skin (BIRDS) team, contributing to the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study.
Responsibilities include:
- Develop a core understanding of assigned research areas methodology and its components.
- Carry out quantitative analyses and statistical modeling to produce results on a given timeline as part of collaborative research projects.
- Extract data from various sources, format, transform, review, and assess data sources for relevance and utility.
- Apply computational and statistical tools and algorithms for preprocessing, analysis, and visualization of source data.
- Review, assess, and improve results, methods, and accompanying code to increase relevance and quality for external stakeholders.
- Document code and analytic approaches systematically so analyses can be replicated by other team members.
- Lead discussion in research meetings about results and analyses to vet, improve, and finalize results.
- Contribute to the creation of presentations, manuscripts, and funding proposals.
- Consult with external collaborators and stakeholders to resolve differences in competing estimates and review recommendations for analytic modifications.
- Maintain scientific awareness and intellectual agility with data, methods, and analytic techniques.
- Perform other duties as assigned that fall within the reasonable scope of the research team.
Minimum Requirements:
- Master’s degree in public health, epidemiology, statistics, biostatistics, math, economics, quantitative social sciences, or related discipline plus one year of related experience.
- Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications, except when legal requirements apply (e.g., license, certification, registration).
Additional Requirements:
- Demonstrated interest or relevant experience in research related to vision impairment.
- Strong analytic, critical thinking, and quantitative skills and ability to learn quickly.
- Professional and effective communication with staff at all levels.
- Results‑ and detail‑oriented with the ability to meet tight deadlines and changing priorities independently or in a team.
- Flexibility with hours and workload.
- Proficiency in R, with willingness to learn Python.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Independent and collaborative work capabilities.
- Long‑term interest in contributing to the research mission.
Desired
Qualifications:
- Experience in epidemiological research.
- Experience related to oral disorders.
- Track record of co‑authorship on scientific papers.
- Interest in methodological innovation and initiative to conduct independent analyses.
- Knowledge of machine learning, data mining, and analytic techniques.
- Experience working with external collaborators, researchers, and funders.
- Experience conducting literature reviews, particularly formal systematic reviews.

Conditions of Employment:
- Weekend and evening work may be required.
- Position eligible for remote work in the US; requires overlap of 50% of IHME office hours (8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Pacific Time).

Compensation:
