Would you like to be at the forefront of improving the environment? This is an exciting opportunity to work in our national Agricultural Remote Sensing Team.
Agricultural practices can cause significant and chronic pollution to our precious water environment. These can be caused by leaks of slurry and silage effluent, and other materials, stored and spread on farms. Working with colleagues, you will use GIS, aerial photography and other sources of evidence to identify potential risks to the environment posed by agriculture. This will be in the form of remote farm inspections using a range of aerial imagery and mapping tools.
You will contact farmers remotely and communicate inspection findings with them, including taking relevant enforcement action.
We are looking for dynamic individuals, who like to innovate. The sector of remote sensing it constantly evolving with new technologies and approaches being developed on a regular basis. To this end we need some who can bring new ideas and approaches to help drive forward our abilities.
The team sits in the Agriculture and Land team and is part of the Environment and Business (E&B) Directorate. We’re a dispersed team and work with a wide range of technical, regulatory and project teams across the country. In E&B we promote a positive, inclusive, and supportive culture where everyone feels valued. We use evidence, expertise, engagement, and innovation to enhance and support delivery, influence policy, legislation, and secure resources.
Experience/skillsRequired
- Good understanding surrounding Remote Sensing / Earth Observation data
- Good working knowledge of desktop GIS software and ESRI products, including for data manipulation and analysis
- An ability to use your knowledge of remote sensing & GIS to solve problems.
- Experience of producing accurate reports and letter writing
- Experience of communicating with a variety teams and stakeholders
- A knowledge and interest in farms, agricultural regulation and the common causes of agricultural diffuse pollution would be beneficial.
- A self‑motivated and organised individual with excellent attention to detail.
- A strong team ethic and an ability to work independently.

You’ll have an EA Office base location, as a national role the working location is flexible / hybrid. We use smart tools to stay connected and reduce travel, some travel and overnights may be required.
