Job Summary

Hosted at Dalhousie University, the new Centre of Excellence in Fisheries Science focuses on training future fisheries scientists. The role involves preparing training materials, creating graphics for publications and presentations, and supporting capacity-building efforts through administrative support for grants, training, and impactful research that benefits communities, government, and industry. The Analyst will manage extensive datasets with proficiency in spatial analysis, map design, data management, and web Geographic Information System (GIS) development.

This work will enhance research capabilities, public engagement, and operational efficiency. Key responsibilities include compiling, evaluating, and cataloguing data from industry and government sources, assessing coverage, quality, and research suitability, and collaborating with scientists and research teams on cartographic design, data creation, quality assurance, metadata development, and data analysis. This work will support data-integration frameworks that strengthen Canada’s national capacity and contribute to international fisheries research and policy development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and maintain both physical and interactive online products, including Esri Story Maps, to enhance public outreach and improve data accessibility.
  • Facilitate data sharing among industry, government, academia, and Indigenous partners.
  • Create graphic and cartographic figures by integrating diverse data sources such as scientific survey data, commercial fishing records, and fisher knowledge for technical reports, scientific publications, workshops, lectures, training materials, and media outlets.
  • Stay current with relevant research literature, technologies, and tools.
  • Organize travel and logistical arrangements for Centre students, staff, and visiting researchers.
  • Contribute to budgeting and financial administration. Support grant applications by managing documentation, securing collaborator information, and ensuring all requirements are met.

    The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work from within Nova Scotia) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.

    Required Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree or diploma in cartography, geographic information systems (GIS), or a related field, with three to five years of experience in data management and GIS data development (or equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Proficiency working with and analyzing fisheries-dependent and fisheries-independent data, as well as oceanographic and environmental datasets.
  • Demonstrated experience in Web GIS and Esri Story Map design.
  • Demonstrated experience in website development and maintenance.
  • Proficiency in ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst, Global Mapper, Adobe Creative Cloud, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating effectively with academic and non-academic partners.

  • Administrative experience, including travel planning, budgeting, and grant application support.
