Principal Archaeologist

Locations:
Basingstoke, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Leeds – flexible hybrid working model.

• Prepare and deliver Cultural Heritage desk‑based assessments, heritage statements, environmental statements (ES) chapters and other high‑standard planning application documents.
• Support and lead delivery of development projects across renewables, defence, water and major infrastructure.
• Provide bid production and internal system support for heritage consultancy projects.
• Lead or support DCO projects from initiation through consent and mitigation, including examination support.
• Arrange and chair statutory consultation meetings.
• Conduct regular formal quality assurance of reporting such as desk‑based assessments and environmental statements.
• Mentor and provide task‑specific training for graduate and consultant staff.
• Ensure health and safety procedures are followed at all times.
• Collaborate closely with clients, colleagues and other discipline leads to optimise project delivery.
• Contribute innovative ideas to enhance the Heritage team’s offering.
• Lead training workshops and develop sector expertise working parties.

• Relevant first degree and/or post‑graduate qualification in archaeology.
• Appropriate level of membership of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists or equivalent.
• Technical and analytical skills.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Evidence of experience in heritage consultancy environment and UK planning system.
