Research Fellow in Quantum Simulation Algorithms on IBM-Q hardware

Salary range: £41,064 - £44,746 per annum
Contract type:
Fixed Term until 31 December 2027 (extension to be possible, subject to performance)
Closing date: 21/08/2026

Research Fellow in the field of quantum computing for the development of quantum simulation algorithms. The job post will be held in the research group of Dr Jaewoo Joo at the School of Computing, Mathematics and Physics (SCMAP) in the University of Portsmouth, UK. This role will play a key role in a part of international research collaborations with Quantum Computing Team at the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) in Korea.

The main project will involve the development of variational quantum algorithms in the first-quantised Hamiltonian models for open quantum systems. The candidate should have a strong track record in quantum computation and simulation field with experience of programming skills (i.e., Qiskit, Qutip, and Mathematica). Applicants are expected to have a PhD and few-year postdoctoral experience in a relevant area. The knowledge of developing variational quantum algorithms experimentally would be beneficial for conducting the project (e.g., quantum simulation computing using IBM-Q computers).

The knowledge of quantum error-mitigation and computational skills for variational optimisation codes is also desired.

This role is primarily campus-based and is not normally suitable for remote working. However, hybrid working arrangements may be considered in exceptional circumstances and can be discussed during the recruitment process.

Interviews are currently anticipated to be held on 2 September 2026.

This appointment is offered on a fixed-term contract until 31 December 2027 but we expect a few months' extension to be possible, subject to performance.
