Overview

The Biodiversity Data Analyst will play a critical role in analyzing ecological datasets to inform conservation strategies. This position supports EWT’s mission to safeguard South Africa’s unique ecosystems by transforming raw data into actionable insights. The role involves working with satellite imagery, species distribution models, and environmental monitoring tools to assess biodiversity trends and support evidence-based decision-making.

Key Responsibilities
  • Analyze ecological datasets using statistical software (R, Python, or similar) to identify patterns and trends.
  • Develop and maintain databases for biodiversity monitoring, ensuring data accuracy and accessibility.
  • Collaborate with field researchers to interpret data and provide insights for conservation planning.
  • Produce visualizations and reports to communicate findings to stakeholders and policymakers.
  • Conduct spatial analysis using GIS tools to map species habitats and ecosystem health.
  • Support grant applications by preparing data summaries and technical documentation.
Required Skills
  • Proficiency in statistical analysis and data visualization tools (e.g., R, Python, Tableau).
  • Experience with GIS software (QGIS, ArcGIS) for spatial data analysis.
  • Strong understanding of ecological principles and biodiversity conservation practices.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for reporting to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Knowledge of environmental policy frameworks in South Africa.
Education
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, Geography, or related field.
  • Postgraduate qualification in Data Science or Conservation Biology is an advantage.
Experience
  • 2-3 years of experience in ecological data analysis or environmental research.
  • Proven track record in managing large datasets and producing actionable insights.
Salary

35,000 – 45,000 SSP per annum, depending on experience.
