Position: Animal Research Technician (Fixed Term)

An animal research technician position is available in the group of Prof. Walid T. Khaled at the Department of Pharmacology and Cambridge Stem Cell Institute, University of Cambridge.

This position is part of PreBRCATx, a major project funded by the European Research Council (ERC), focused on developing therapeutic interventions to prevent hereditary breast cancer. Building on the Khaled Lab's expertise in tumour initiation and early transformation, this project aims to intercept breast cancer before it starts, with a particular focus on individuals carrying high-risk mutations in BRCA1, BRCA2 and PALB2, the team studies the early molecular and cellular changes that occur in high-risk breast tissue and tests the ability of known drugs to reverse or block these changes.

This role offers a rare opportunity to contribute to cancer interception science at the frontier of personalised prevention, with strong translational potential.

The role
  • Maintain and manage our GEMM colonies, overseeing breeding, genotyping and colony management
  • Plan, deliver and support in vivo experiments, including the administration of therapeutic and preventive agents, monitoring of disease progression, and timely collection of tissues and samples
  • Carry out regulated procedures under your Home Office personal licence, including dosing by appropriate routes (oral gavage, intraperitoneal and intravenous injection), tumour/lesion measurement, blood sampling and tissue collection
  • Perform husbandry and welfare assessment, monitor experimental endpoints, and maintain meticulous, accurate records
  • Liaise with the Named Animal Care and Welfare Officer (NACWO), Named Veterinary Surgeon and University Biomedical Services to ensure full regulatory and ethical compliance
  • Support the day-to-day running of the lab's in vivo work and the training of junior staff and students

Fixed-term:
The funds for this post are available for 24 months in the first instance.
