Pet Smart Retail Store Leader – Store Leader Overview

Job Summary

Store Leader has responsibility for safety of people and pets, pet parent experience, operational execution, financial outcomes, and HR functions. This role leads the store by driving the store culture and strategies, achieving results, ensuring exceptional service and efficient daily operations, and aligning with Pet Smart policies and ethics.

Responsibilities
  • Recruiting, interviewing, hiring, coaching, and terminating staff decisions.
  • Fostering an open-door culture and leveraging feedback tools to listen to associates.
  • Creating and posting store schedules after input from Experience and Process Leader.
  • Supporting associate development, including reviews, recognition, training, onboarding, mentoring, and succession planning.
  • Delegating effectively and empowering others; driving ownership of results.
  • Communicating priorities to the team and adapting to changes.
  • Addressing associate complaints and recognizing engagement.
  • Ensuring timely associate reviews and maintaining overall store standards.
Overall Store Experience
  • Lead the associate and pet parent experience; ensure pet safety and well-being.
  • Oversee pet parent interactions via phone, in-person, or online; address concerns.
  • Create an environment focused on exceptional experiences for pets and associates.
  • Evaluate operations and seek process improvements; collaborate with leadership on events and community partnerships.
  • Ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and code of ethics; conduct monthly Core and Services Walks.
  • Maintain safe environments for staff, pets, and customers; manage inventory and in-store processes.
  • Communicate business and financial objectives to leaders and staff.
  • Review in-store camera footage to assess safety and behavior; coach as needed.
  • Take action when a sick or injured pet is identified and coordinate care as needed.
  • Share responsibility for opening and closing procedures to uphold brand promise.
Business Management
  • Deliver corporate strategy and profitability goals; execute leadership directives.
  • Analyze reporting, identify root causes, and implement improvement plans.
  • Identify growth opportunities, recognize successes, and manage store P&L expectations (sales, shrink).
  • Manage expenses including labor and supplies; coordinate with home office for work orders and purchasing.
  • Schedule creation for the entire store; payroll processing and budgeting for labor.
  • Execute required reporting and paperwork; handle store-related errands as needed.
Qualifications
  • 4-6 years of retail leadership or customer-focused experience.
  • Full-time availability with flexibility; ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Proficiency in computer applications; strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to stay composed under pressure; strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
People Leadership
  • Typically oversees Experience Leader and Process Leader, up to six lead associates and 10-70 non-leader associates; supervisory responsibilities per Pet Smart policies.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Standing, walking, climbing a ladder; handling equipment; frequent reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching; depth perception required. Reasonable accommodations available.
  • Occasional lifting up to 50 pounds; team lifting up to 100 pounds; may handle pet hair and live animals; environment may be noisy.
