Bowland Ecology is CIEEM’s Medium Sized Practice of the year  and a well-established and thriving ecological consultancy.

In preparation for the 2026 survey season, we have created a new permanent position of Technical Support Officer (TSO). This is an office-based role, working out of our Head Office in Clitheroe, Lancashire and will provide integral support to our Ecology Team.

Our TSO has two over-arching responsibilities:
  • Booking, allocation, preparation and maintenance of field survey equipment (Night Vision Aids, Static/Hand Held Bat Detectors and Trail Cameras)
  • Uploading, Monitoring, Analysing and Tracking survey data

Our ideal candidate will have experience of data management and technical/operational support as well as an interest in ecology and the environment. You’ll need to be comfortable handling equipment, have excellent organisational skills and an eye for detail.

We pride ourselves on offering learning and development opportunities to all staff, while ensuring that employee wellbeing underpins all that we do.

Due to the nature of the role, there is no opportunity for working from home.

You can expect:
  • Competitive salary (from April 2026 at least Real Living Wage of £26,227 PA)
  • Payment of CIEEM membership fees (where relevant)
  • Ongoing support via a bespoke training programme
  • Work within a supportive and inclusive team, with a culture that values collaboration, open communication, shared purpose, alongside individual goals and well-being
  • Employee Assistance Programme
Scope of the role:
  • Coordinate the booking and allocation of survey equipment (cameras, statics, tablets, detectors) for field teams.
  • Ensure all equipment is fully charged, correctly configured, and supplied with appropriately sized and formatted SD cards prior to deployment.
  • Maintain up-to-date equipment records, including inventory spreadsheets and Memento asset‑tracking software.
  • Monitor data quality, identify and investigate discrepancies, and update all relevant data‑review tracking sheets.
  • Inform Project Managers when footage and data are ready for analysis.
  • Analyse footage and audio recordings, extract key events, and update associated data‑review documentation.
  • Notify the Administration team when consumable supplies (e.g., batteries, cable ties) require replenishment.
  • Report faulty or damaged equipment to Administration for quarantine, repair, or replacement.
  • Pre‑season testing of equipment and basic repairs when appropriate.
Successful Candidates will have:
Knowledge and Experience
  • Experience of data management, technical or operational support. Ideally experience will have been gained in an ecology environment, but transferable experience will be considered (E).

  • Understanding of, and experience with, bat survey methodologies and associated equipment (D).
  • Knowledge of acoustic analysis techniques and species identification (D).
