Analysis Officer – Organic Agriculture – Somerset West

Job Description

My Client hiring an Analysis Officer. The candidate is to start as soon as possible. The position entails interpreting analysis results of sampling performed on organic products to determine the compliance with the requirements of different organic certification schemes. Initial training will be focused on the National Organic Program and the EU 2018/848 organic standard.

• Interpret analysis results – Check the admissibility of results; evaluate substance(s) detected on the product to determine compliance or set hypotheses to confirm; issue interpretation conclusions regarding extent and origin of substances detected, related non‑compliance, and any additional action.
• Coordinate actions related to interpretation – Coordinate with relevant internal staff in charge of evaluation and certification on the action to perform.
• Maintain communication with authorities and other certification bodies – Answer notifications about substances detected, coordinate preparation of reports/information requested by authorities.
• Follow‑up laboratories of the area – Be technical day‑to‑day point of contact; define lists of substances to analyse per product; regularly evaluate the service performed and issue annual quality evaluation report.
• Provide support to internal staff – Provide advice, recommendation, and appropriate tools for risk assessment, sampling method, sampling plan, and dedicated evaluation; give advice to certification staff on decisions, operator requests, and communication about analysis results; provide technical information about substances; provide technical training about sampling, substance, analysis, and laboratory.
• Sample coordinator – Record all analysis results received of samples processed by the laboratories; handle any irregularities identified on analysis reports.

Education: BSc in Chemistry, BAgric, or relevant tertiary qualification. Additional courses completed like AVCASA would be beneficial.

Language: Excellent English and Afrikaans spoken and written competency.

Experience: Any experience in the agricultural sector, particularly organic/sustainable, would be beneficial, as well as experience in laboratory work involving MRLs.

Technical skills: High level of computer literacy – proficient in Microsoft Office.

Behavioural skills: Independent and self‑motivated; well organized; honest and trustworthy; self‑confident; attention to detail; good communication skills; willing and eager to self‑learn; keen interest in organic and sustainability.
