Job DetailsTo assist and lead in the daily operations in the Core Facilities Laboratory at The University of Texas at Austin – Marine Science Institute. The Core Facilities Laboratory houses three Thermo Fisher Delta-series isotope ratio mass spectrometers, (peripheral devices;
Trace Gas-Chromatography 1310 ISOLINK II, Liquid Chromatography ISOLINK, elemental analyzer and a Gas Bench II), an Agilent liquid chromatography-ion-mobility-time of flight mass spectrometer, Shimadzu TOC/TDN analyzer, SEAL nutrient analyzer, and a host of complimentary equipment to support analysis of marine samples. Incoming instrumentation (expected Q1-2026) will also include a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer and a laser-ablation isotope ratio mass spectrometer.
This position is responsible for the daily operation of the analytical instrumentation and developing methods to support UTMSI Faculty and is under the direction of the Core Facility Manager. Day‑to‑day you will be responsible for weighing standards, calibrating instrumentation, performing preventative maintenance, scheduling, and data processing. The facilities are in Port Aransas, Texas and do not support a remote working environment.
- Weighing standards for analysis

- Data analysis and management
- Working with faculty, research scientists and students to develop novel methods to support their research needs
- Performing preventative maintenance
- Scheduling instrumentation through iLab (laboratory management system)
- Procurement of laboratory supplies
- Invoicing analysis for internal and external clients
- Providing expertise in liquid chromatography applications, data acquisition and workflows (Mass Hunter, Isodat, Qtegra)
- Conducts other duties as assigned from the Core Facilities Manager
- Minimum Bachelor of Science with a strong emphasis on analytical methods
- Ability to communicate complex scientific ideas
- Demonstrated knowledge in isotope and/or liquid chromatography mass spectrometry analytical techniques
- Meticulous detail to quality control and assurance
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently
- M.S. or Ph.D in a relevant discipline with 3+ years of experience in analytical sciences
- Knowledge of data workflows in software suites that includes Mass Hunter, Qtegra, ISODAT
- Prior experience in EPA methods pertaining to PFAS preparation, analysis, and data processing
- Prior experience in isotope ratio mass spectrometry and applications
$60,000+ depending on qualifications

- 40 hour per week work schedule, FLSA Exempt, expected to continue
