The Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (USDB) is seeking a visionary and dynamic individual to join USDB as a Deaf Mentor in the Ogden area.
Roles and Responsibilities- Provide home-based services to families with deaf/hard-of-hearing children, age birth to three years, in the areas of American Sign Language (ASL) and deaf culture.
- Prepare and write lesson plans.
- Perform weekly home visits to children and families, following the curriculum provided, and model activities for parents to work on with their children during the week.
- Help families access deaf community activities and events.
- Apply bilingual, bicultural teaching methods to deaf/hard-of-hearing children.
- Must be deaf.
- Must have advanced American Sign Language (ASL) skills.
- Must have knowledge of Deaf culture.
- Must be well-versed in language acquisition, principles of ASL best practices, and have a specialization in teaching adults the principles of ASL and Deaf culture.
- Deal with people in a manner which shows sensitivity, tact, and professionalism.
- Communicate clearly and effectively.
- Maintain strict confidentiality.
- Successful completion of a criminal background check.

- Travel is required.
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule including evenings and Saturdays, and participate in Deaf culture events.
- Work involves typical office risks, which are minimized by proper safety procedures.
- Physical demands are generally light, including sitting, walking, standing, bending, and driving.
- Preference may be given to applicants with a degree in Early Childhood Education and/or experience working with deaf/hard-of-hearing children.
- The work schedule is typically Monday through Friday, 7.30 hours per day, 183 days per school year.
