This position is responsible for interacting with youth on probation for the purpose of implementing case plans, and making referrals to appropriate community programs. Administrative duties will be assigned to Assistant Probation Officers by their supervisor. Associate's degree or equivalent of two years post-secondary education in Corrections, Counseling, Criminal Justice, Education, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, or related Human Services field AND one year experience in Corrections, Human Services Treatment Programs, or related experience.

Three years' experience in Corrections, Human Services Treatment Programs, or related experience.
OR
Combination of education and experience to equal three or more years.

Required license(s):

  • Valid driver's license required
  • First Aid/CPR certificate within 6 months of hire. Training is provided.
  • Preferred qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Corrections, Counseling, Criminal Justice, Education, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, or related Human Services field.
  • To be eligible for hire, an applicant must successfully complete a background check and meet the criminal history background criteria required to access certain networks/systems necessary to perform the essential functions of this position. The law and/or County policy will disqualify applicants with a particular criminal history background from employment in this position.

    Pursuant to Dakota County Policy, this position is designated as Safety Sensitive. “Safety-sensitive position” means a position, including any supervisory or management position, in which impairment caused by drug, alcohol, or cannabis use would threaten the health and safety of any person as defined in Minnesota Statutes Section 181.950, subdivision 13.

    These examples do not include all possible tasks in this work and do not limit the assignment of related tasks in any position of this classification. Regular attendance according to the position's management approved work schedule is required for all positions.

    RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Assist the Juvenile Intake Unit with juvenile restitution investigations, including gathering financial information, contacting victims, and documenting restitution-related findings.
    • Provide secure transportation of youth between the Juvenile Services Center and other secure facilities. Supervise youth in custody awaiting court appearances, including supervision during virtual court hearings at the Juvenile Services Center.
    • Work with Evidence Based Practices Coordinator to schedule cognitive behavioral groups. This staff person contacts youth/families to set up and troubleshoot transportation and other arrangements. This staff person will use a County vehicle to transport youth.
      • Facilitate Cognitive Behavioral intervention groups on a rotating basis with other probation agents.
      • Supervise youth at on-site community events and programs. Use evidence-based practices such as motivational interviewing to manage youths’ behaviors, and to help restructure their thinking. Establish and maintain contact with youths’ probation officers to assure coordinated interventions.
