Family Help Disability Advisor – 3 Month Contract
Location: Atlantic Wharf, Cardiff
Contract: Temporary (3 Months)
Hours: Full-Time
Working Pattern: Hybrid Working – Primarily Home-Based with Attendance at County Hall and Community Visits as Required
SummaryThis temporary 3-month contract role focuses on supporting children and young people with disabilities or additional needs and their families. The Family Help Disability Advisor will assess the wellbeing needs of families, particularly those with children with disabilities, and provide short-term interventions, practical advice and guidance. The role aims to empower families, build resilience and ensure support is in place to prevent escalation to specialist services.
ResponsibilitiesFamily Support
- Work directly with children, young people and families.
- Assess individual and family support needs.
- Provide practical, emotional and wellbeing support.
- Deliver targeted short‑term interventions.
- Assist families in developing skills, confidence and resilience.
- Support children and young people with disabilities and additional needs.
- Promote inclusion, independence and wellbeing.
- Understand the impact of disabilities on development and emotional wellbeing.
- Support families in accessing appropriate services and support networks.
- Complete needs assessments and identify appropriate support pathways.
- Develop action plans with families.
- Monitor and review outcomes and progress.
- Ensure interventions remain child‑centred and outcome‑focused.
- Provide information and advice regarding available services and support.
- Signpost families to relevant organisations and community services.
- Ensure families understand available options and support arrangements.
- Advocate on behalf of children and families where required.
- Collaborate with social workers, schools, health professionals and community organisations.
- Participate in multi‑agency discussions and meetings.
- Share information appropriately to support positive outcomes.
- Recognise indicators of risk, harm or vulnerability.
- Liaise with social workers and partner agencies where concerns arise.
- Ensure safeguarding procedures are followed at all times.
- Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date records.
- Complete case notes, reports and assessments.
- Ensure compliance with confidentiality and data protection requirements.
- Experience working with children and young people with disabilities and additional needs.
- Experience supporting children, young people and families in community, education, health or social care settings.
- Strong understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures.
- Experience carrying out assessments and delivering family‑focused interventions.
- Ability to build positive relationships with children, young people and families.
- Full UK Driving Licence and access to a vehicle.
- Willingness to travel across Cardiff and surrounding areas when required.
- Previous Local Authority experience.
- Experience with in Children’s Services, Early Help, Family Support or Disability Services.
- Experience using case management systems and electronic recording systems.
- Knowledge of services available to children with disabilities and additional needs.
- Relevant qualification in Health & Social Care, Childcare, Family Support, Youth Work, Education or equivalent experience.
- Family Support or Early Help qualification (desirable).
- Safeguarding training (desirable).
- Disability support or SEND‑related qualifications (desirable).
- Understanding of the needs of children with disabilities and additional needs.
- Knowledge of safeguarding and child protection procedures.
- Understanding of family support and early intervention approaches.
- Understanding of child development and wellbeing.
- Good knowledge of Microsoft Office packages and case management systems.
- Knowledge of Children’s Services and Early Help pathways (desirable).
- Understanding of local support services available to families (desirable).
- Knowledge of SEND and disability legislation (desirable).
