An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and highly motivated person with a passion for supporting people affected by homelessness, substance misuse and complex needs to join our team. We are looking to appoint a Specialist Support Worker
- Addictions to work within our Lifehouse, providing high-quality, person-centred support to adults experiencing homelessness and addiction-related challenges.

Key responsibilities
  • You will work alongside clients to understand their individual needs, build trusting and professional relationships, and support them to make positive and sustainable changes in their lives.
  • As a Specialist Support Worker, you will provide focused support around substance and alcohol misuse, helping clients to understand the impact of their addictions and encouraging engagement with appropriate treatment, recovery and community services.
  • You will work collaboratively with external agencies and specialist services to ensure clients receive coordinated and effective support.
  • You will also contribute to harm-reduction approaches, relapse prevention and recovery planning, while promoting client choice, dignity and independence.
  • The role will also include day-to-day activities such as administration, maintaining accurate case records, attending meetings and supporting the wider operation of the Lifehouse.
The successful candidate will
  • Have experience of working with people affected by substance or alcohol misuse, homelessness or other complex needs.
  • Have a good understanding of addiction, recovery, harm reduction and relapse prevention.
  • Be able to build positive, professional relationships with people who may have experienced significant trauma and disadvantage.
  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Be able to work collaboratively with clients, colleagues and external agencies.
  • Have good organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritise their workload.
  • Be IT literate and confident completing accurate case notes and administrative tasks.
  • Have good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Understand safeguarding and the importance of professional boundaries.
  • Be non-judgemental, compassionate and committed to promoting dignity, choice and independence.
  • Be able to work effectively with people who may present with challenging or complex behaviours.
  • Be committed to supporting clients to achieve sustainable recovery and positive life outcomes.
  • Be able to work within the Christian ethos of The Salvation Army, demonstrating compassion, respect and acceptance towards everyone we support.

Appointment will be subject to satisfactory references, a criminal record check (Enhanced with barred list DBS Disclosure check for the adult workforce) and evidence of your Right to Work in the UK in line with Home Office requirements. As we are not a licensed sponsor, applicants must already have the right to work in the UK.
