Linux Software Engineer – Ubuntu for Next‑Gen Silicon
Join Canonical, a leading open‑source software provider, as a Linux Software Engineer focusing on Ubuntu optimisation for next‑generation silicon across architectures such as x86, ARM, RISC‑V, Power
PC, and s390x. This is a globally remote role.

Responsibilities- Collaborate proactively within a distributed team to ensure flawless user experience for Ubuntu users.
- Evolve and maintain Ubuntu packages and silicon‑specific features across servers, HPC, AI, IoT, PCs and automotive systems.
- Evaluate contributions from other engineers and keep software quality high.
- Shape the future of Ubuntu through new ideas and advising on related work.
- Work with the Ubuntu and Debian communities, upstream projects, and commercial customers.
- Debug open‑source and internal code, assist customers integrating apps, SDKs, building OS images and optimising applications.
- Drive hardware enablement, platform virtualization, containerised workloads and new architecture tool chains.
- Manage platform security (secure boot, full‑disk encryption, Ubuntu Core, confidential computing).
- Participate in global travel for internal events 2‑4 times a year while working from home.
- Exceptional academic record from high school and university.
- Undergraduate degree in a technical subject or a compelling alternative narrative.
- Strong passion for technology and collaborative work.
- Curious, flexible, articulate and accountable with excellent soft skills.
- Proficiency in C, C++ and Python.
- Experience or interest in Linux distribution packaging.
- Experience or interest in open‑source maintenance, contribution and licensing.
- Fundamental understanding of package management and dependency resolution.
- Experience with graphics, audio or multimedia stacks.
- Knowledge of virtualization and container platforms (Docker, OCI, Kubernetes).
- Hardware enablement for Smart
NICs, NVMe, GPUs, audio components, sensors. - Performance optimisation and toolchain development.
- Networking protocols (TCP/IP, DHCP, HTTP/REST).
- Security best practices.
- IoT and embedded systems, board‑level hardware, SoCs, bootloaders, firmware, OS, applications and services.
- Remote‑first work environment with twice‑yearly in‑person sprints.
