Software Engineer, C# / Unity Developer
Overview
GovCIO is seeking a Unity Developer (Software Developer
2) to support the modernization of a USSOCOM Science and Technology Virtual Reality (VR) training project. The project enables Special Operations Forces to train in realistic virtual environments. This position is based in Pensacola, FL, with a hybrid on-site/remote work model.
As a Unity Developer on this project, you will design, implement, and maintain Unity-based capabilities that extend and modernize the platform, working within an existing codebase to deliver performant, mission-focused features while collaborating closely with engineers, designers, and government stakeholders.
- Design, code, and maintain Unity-based applications and modules in support of the Project.
- Implement features in C# following provided specifications, coding standards, and secure development practices.
- Extend and refactor existing VR Workbench capabilities, including scenes, prefabs, UI, and interaction logic.
- Develop scripts and tools to automate routine or manual tasks in the Unity Editor (e.g., bulk scene updates, object configuration, content management).
- Analyze system and application requirements, including input/output needs, data flow, and integration points with external systems and services.
- Profile and optimize Unity scenes and assets to meet VR performance targets (frame rate, memory usage, and load times).
- Participate in code reviews to ensure quality, maintainability, and adherence to standards and project architecture.
- Write and maintain technical documentation, including implementation notes, user instructions, and operations guides in accordance with project standards.
- Collaborate with VR designers, engineers, and government stakeholders to translate requirements into implementable Unity features.
- Support troubleshooting and defect resolution in development and test environments.
Education:
- High School with 3 – 6 years (or commensurate experience)
- Eligible to obtain/maintain a Secret DoD security clearance
- 2 years of 3D development experience in Unity
- Strong C# programming skills (OOP and core data structures)
- Proficiency with the Unity Editor (scenes, hierarchies, Game Objects, prefabs, basic lighting, asset/scene management)
- Experience using Git and standard branching workflows in a team environment
- Ability to write Unity C# scripts to implement features and automate workflows
- Working knowledge of 3D fundamentals (meshes, materials, textures, UVs) and how they affect performance
- Experience maintaining and modifying existing codebases (debugging, refactoring, incremental enhancements)
- Experience developing VR applications in Unity and optimizing for VR performance (frame rate, polygon counts, draw calls, shaders, post-processing)
- Experience designing gameplay/interaction systems (input handling, state machines, interaction logic)
- Familiarity with Unity’s Profiler and other performance/debugging tools
- Experience integrating Unity applications with external services, APIs, or data sources
- Experience with multiplayer/networked applications in Unity (e.g., Mirror or similar)
