EFL is a for‑profit social enterprise company that is accelerating poverty reduction through the use of innovative tools to help entrepreneurs in emerging markets gain access to capital so they can expand their businesses. EFL is geared towards increasing access to finance by equipping banks in emerging markets with better tools to understand credit risk for people at the bottom of the pyramid.

EFL is a spin‑off from a research project initially with the Harvard Center for International Development, working with many of the largest banks in 25 countries across Africa, Latin America, and Asia. With offices in Lima, Peru and Boston, Massachusetts, as well as clients across five different continents, EFL is impacting SME and micro‑finance across the globe.

In short

EFL is seeking a savvy senior developer / tech lead to take EFL’s technology and product development efforts to the next level. As the tech lead, you will have technical ownership over the full EFL stack: mobile front‑end UI customization for use in emerging economies → systems and database infrastructure → back‑end asynchronous scoring systems → integrating mobile, social, and GIS data into EFL’s product → building integration platform and framework for plugging EFL into other fintech platforms.

You will lead a team of junior developers and contractors across all aspects of development, making day‑to‑day design decisions and managing team development through usage of scrum best practices. You will design a development process that works and leads to fast product iterations that work across multiple continents for some of the most challenging environmental conditions. You will be an uber‑efficient developer and have years of battle scars to prove it.

Location

We have both real and virtual offices in Lima, Peru and Boston. Relocation to Boston or Lima is not required, however, as the majority of the dev team is currently in Lima, this position will require relocation to Lima or an initial period of 2–3 months of up‑front time spent in Lima followed by remote work with periodic trips back to Lima.

It’s an interesting time to be in Peru – the economy is taking off and EFL is situated right in the middle of it. With its headquarters in the heart of the Miraflores district, EFL is in the middle of a vibrant local community with an exploding food and cultural scene, year‑round great surf, and easy access to travel throughout South America.

You will have the opportunity to travel to visit clients in Peru and other regions in Latin America to understand first‑hand how EFL’s tools are used in the field to increase access to finance. Remote working is possible but strong preference for North or South America due to proximity and timezone.

Requirements

Mandatory:

• BS in Computer Science, Software Engineering or equivalent degree

• 3–5+ years as a senior developer with design and system architecture responsibilities

• 1–4+ years managing other developers either as direct supervisor/manager or as tech lead

• 4–7 years web development experience in Python, Ruby or PHP with 3–5 years experience with a modern MVC framework (Django, Ruby‑on‑Rails, Spring, etc)

• 4–7 years experience with MySQL, Postgres, Oracle, or MSSQL

• Advanced proficiency with Git

• Advanced proficiency in either C++, Java, or C#

• Advanced proficiency with Linux, Apache

• Advanced proficiency with REST and SOAP

Highly desired:

• Expert in Django

• Expert proficiency in CSS3/HTML5

• Experience with Celery

• Experience with Amazon Web Services

• Experience with a No

SQL implementation/migration

• Experience with client‑side MVC development node.js, backbone, etc
