Teams meet two to four times a year in person to align strategy and execution.
This technical management role will lead a team of Python and Golang micro‑services that power our global software distribution engine—known publicly as the Snap Store and Charmhub.io. The system is a unified marketplace that manages software releases, betas, stable releases, and branches. The manager will drive the transition to a high‑scale SaaS experience, ensuring reliable, performant delivery while collaborating with Canonical’s security team.
The Engineering Manager must be technically strong, a capable leader, and focus on building an effective, high‑performing team. Code reviews, architectural leadership, documentation, and performance optimisation are core responsibilities. The manager will coach, mentor and develop engineers, foster a productive culture, and maintain high standards of engineering practice.
LocationThis role may be based remotely in the Americas, Europe, Middle East or Africa time zones.
What Your Day Will Look Like- Lead a remote team of engineers in your time zone
- Develop talent through coaching, mentoring, feedback, and hands‑on career development
- Set and manage expectations with other engineering teams, management, and external stakeholders
- Be an active part of the leadership team and collaborate with other leaders in the organisation
- Create clean web service APIs to support both CLI and web frontend clients, using Python and optionally Golang
- Engage with many other teams at Canonical, the open‑source community and commercial partners
- Good experience leading modern, agile software development practices
- Experience forming a healthy, collaborative engineering culture aligned with company values
- Demonstrated ability to model sound engineering principles and directly contribute to the team’s goals
- Willingness to travel up to 4 times a year for internal events
- Track record of mentoring, developing and growing people
- Passion and expertise in software development
- Focus on success and timely delivery of high‑quality software
- Commitment to nurturing great team culture and spirit
- Experience and commitment to agile development methodologies
- Python development experience (Golang experience is a plus)
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Practical experience with Linux system administration
Your base pay will depend on various factors such as geographical location, experience, knowledge, and skills. In addition to a competitive base salary, certain roles may receive annual bonuses and performance‑based incentives for revenue or utilisation.
