Software Engineer
Nottingham Trent House (95002), United Kingdom, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire – Technical Analyst – Credit Underwriting
About this roleOur Underwriting team ensures we make the right decisions for our customers looking to access credit. We are looking for a pragmatist who bridges the gap between technical data work and business strategy, focussing on cash flow models used to estimate the value of new lending. You will use your Python skills to automate workflows, clean data, and build reusable tools that empower our analysts to make faster, better lending decisions.
Whatyou’ll do
- Enable Analysts: Translate complex data and analytical requirements into clean, reusable Python code to help our analysts reach informed strategy decisions.
- Automate & Optimise: Develop, build, and maintain functions and tools to improve the workflow for analysts, including improving existing processes and creating new solutions.
- Bridge the Gap: You understand the why behind the code and are able to communicate complicated technical solutions to stakeholders.
- Maintain Quality: Ensure the tools and datasets the business relies on are documented, reliable, and easy to understand.
- Commercial Focus: Partner with stakeholders to trade off perfect engineering for high-value business delivery.
- You are interested in understanding how credit underwriting models work and how they are used by the business.
- You are comfortable writing Python for data analysis and modelling (e.g. Pandas, Polars, Light
GBM, Scikit‑learn); you know how to pull data from databases and manipulate it to get answers. - You care about writing code that is readable, reusable and well documented.
- You’re familiar with the tools you’ll use to make development efficient e.g. git, unit testing frameworks or code linters.
We are committed to creating a level playing field and seek to create teams that are representative of our customers and the communities we serve. We’d love to hear from you if you identify with a typically under‑represented group in our industry and are particularly keen to hear from women, the LGBTQ+ community and ethnic minority candidates.
Where and how you'll workThis is a permanent position based in our Nottingham office.
We have a hybrid working model, so you’ll be based in our office 3 days a week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, and can work from home on Monday and Friday.
Many of our associates have flexible working arrangements, and we're open to talking about an arrangement that works for you.
What’s in it for you- Bring us all this – and you’ll be well rewarded with a role contributing to the roadmap of an organisation committed to transformation.
- We offer high performers strong and diverse career progression, investing heavily in developing great people through our Capital One University training programmes (and appropriate external providers).

- Open‑plan work spaces and accessible facilities designed to inspire and support you. Our Nottingham head‑office has a fully‑serviced gym, subsidised restaurant, mindfulness and music rooms.

We want to work with top talent: whoever you are, whatever you look like, wherever you come from. We know it’s about what you do, not just what you say. That’s why we make our recruitment process fair and accessible.
