Position: Staff Backend Engineer, Developer Experience
Location: Dauphin

About the Role

As a Staff Backend Engineer in the Developer Experience group, you’ll work across Git Lab’s global teams of Backend and Software Engineers in Test to identify and eliminate friction in the development lifecycle. Your time will be split between hands‑on coding in Ruby and Go, designing scalable solutions, and influencing the engineering culture across the organization.

Responsibilities
  • Drive technical excellence across six Developer Experience teams by providing hands‑on engineering contributions and leadership.
  • Champion engineering needs by gathering feedback, translating pain points into actionable improvements, and shaping the Developer Experience roadmap.
  • Transform testing at scale, modernising the testing framework to support rapid, reliable feedback for developers.
  • Optimize CI/CD pipelines, reducing merge friction and enhancing iterative feedback loops.
  • Break down systemic bottlenecks by collaborating with Platform, Product, and Infrastructure teams to eliminate architectural and process friction.
  • Shape engineering culture, fostering continuous learning, inclusion, and improvement across Git Lab.
Qualifications
  • Deep experience with developer tooling, Dev Ex strategies, and robust testing frameworks.
  • Proven leadership of platform or transformation initiatives across multiple teams.
  • Strong ability to influence without authority and collaborate across functions.
  • Familiarity with Dev Ops workflows and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in a remote‑first environment.
  • A product mindset dedicated to empowering developers.
  • Alignment with Git Lab values, especially collaboration, iteration, and transparency.

United States salary range: $131,600—$282,000 USD.
