The Role As a Java Software Engineer you will play a critical role in both the sustainment of the current environment and the delivery of new user‑facing capabilities. The selected individual will develop solutions to complex technical issues and problems that impact multiple areas or disciplines; regularly employ ingenuity and creativity to develop new technical solutions and systems to achieve functional objectives.
As a Software Engineer in Leidos, you will be immersed in one of our key programmes. On behalf of our central government customer, you will have direct impact on the current and future iterations of one of our most important pieces of critical national infrastructure. What will I be doing? Develop, debug, test, document, and deploy software enhancements aligned with the Software Development Strategy.
Design and implement modern single‑page applications using React and Type Script. Consume and integrate with REST APIs, maintaining clean separation from backend and legacy systems. Support delivery commitments across projects and releases. Contribute to the continuous validation and maintenance of the build and deployment pipeline, identifying issues, supporting fixes, and working with the wider team to ensure reliable build, test, and deployment processes.
Investigate, identify, and mitigate software and system issues. Collaborate closely with backend and test engineers to ensure end‑to‑end quality. Work with senior engineers to design UI solutions based on user needs and system constraints. Produce clear technical documentation and maintain readable, well‑structured code. Participate fully in the Agile software development lifecycle. Use tooling such as Bitbucket, Jira, Jenkins, and Confluence to manage code, work items, and builds.
Write and maintain unit and integration tests as part of normal delivery. Contribute to and support UI and API test automation efforts. Communicate progress, risks, and technical decisions clearly to stakeholders. Apply engineering best practices and standard operating procedures. Influence technical decisions through clear, evidence‑based recommendations. What does Leidos need from me? Strong experience building SPAs with React and Type Script.
Experience integrating front‑end applications with REST APIs. Familiarity with Agile software development processes and working within iterative delivery models. Familiarity with the Atlassian tool suite (e.g. Jira, Bitbucket, Bamboo), or equivalent tooling, with a solid understanding of CI/CD concepts, workflows, and practices. Ability to perform complex engineering tasks with minimal supervision. Experience producing technical documentation. Proven experience writing unit and integration tests.
Desirable Skills and Experience Java experience (Java 17/21) , particularly in service or API development.
Experience with other SPA frameworks . Familiarity with modern integration patterns (e.g. Saga, adapters). C/C++ experience. Perl, Python, and/or bash scripting experience. Clearance Requirements:
Successful candidates will be required to be willing and able to obtain UK Security Clearances - this requires a minimum of 5 years residency in the UK What we do for you:
