Job Description & How to Apply Below
Location: City of Edinburgh

Malted builds specialised customer interaction intelligence for financial institutions. Our platform combines advanced language technology with deep domain understanding to help firms make faster, more accurate decisions.

Our proprietary technology, purpose-built for financial services, uncovers signals that generic AI misses, distilling intelligence into insights faster, more efficiently and more securely than anyone else.

We’re a small, passionate, and highly technical team based in Edinburgh, combining deep machine learning experience with a rigorous approach to product design and engineering.

What you’ll do

As an Engineering Manager, you’ll be responsible for building, leading and scaling high-performing engineering squads working on the Malted Platform. You’ll balance people leadership, delivery ownership and technical decision-making. Helping to drive a world-class engineering culture.

You’ll lead a cross-functional squad spanning and work closely with leadership to turn strategy into execution. We do not expect managers to be hands on with code on a daily basis, but we do expect you to be highly technical. You’ll remain close to the work reviewing technical designs, unblocking hard problems and ensuring a high bar for software quality.

Responsibilities

Lead and support a cross functional squad spanning frontend and backend software engineering, machine learning and design.

Own delivery for key parts of the Malted platform, ensuring work is well-scoped, prioritised and executed

Drive technical direction and architectural decisions in collaboration with senior engineers

Helping to create a world-class engineering culture enabling engineers to do their best work, balancing autonomy with accountability

Ensure engineering best practices across the team, including code quality, testing, security and reliability

Translate strategic goals into clear technical plans and execution roadmaps

Support hiring, onboarding and team scaling as Malted grows

Who you are

You’re an experienced engineering leader who enjoys developing people as much as software systems. You’re comfortable making decisions with incomplete information and thrive in environments where clarity, trust and ownership matter. You care deeply about technical quality, client outcomes, and building a world-class AI-enabled product.

Eligible to work in the UK

10+ years of professional software engineering experience, including experience in a technical leadership or management role

Proven experience leading and developing engineers, through mentorship, feedback and performance management

Experience delivering and operating production backend systems at scale

Strong experience with Python (or similar) and modern backend technologies

Deep familiarity with AWS or another major cloud platform

Experience with distributed systems, APIs and production infrastructure

Working knowledge of containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes) and CI/CD pipelines

Strong understanding of system design, reliability and engineering trade-offs

Comfortable working in a fast-paced, collaborative startup environment

Preferred requirements

Experience managing teams in enterprise or regulated environments (e.g. finance, insurance)

Background in deep tech, data-intensive or ML-enabled products

Experience scaling teams or platforms through periods of rapid growth

Strong understanding of security and compliance considerations in distributed systems

Bachelor degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field (Or Equivalent Experience).

Familiarity with ML concepts and deploying or integrating ML systems

Working at Malted

We’re based in Edinburgh and work from the office three days a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday). The rest of the week is work from home. We keep a high bar for technical quality but a low tolerance for ego. You’ll join a team that values precision, humour and intellectual honesty.

Pension and stock options

Medical and life insurance

Hybrid working and ad-hoc flexibility

The chance to work on one-of-a-kind products at the forefront of the AI industry

Professional development and growth opportunities

A collaborative, inclusive workplace that promotes innovation and teamwork

Free snacks and drinks

Social events and company outings
