Staff Software Developer – Retail (Canada)
We’re looking for a Staff Software Developer to join our Retail team in Canada.
Location:
Canada. Employees can work fully remote, partially remote or in office depending on local office availability. Must be based in Canada and able to work EST/EDT hours.
- Building software: coding, code reviews, bug fixes, debugging, peer programming, incident response, reverse engineering.
- Planning and architecture: estimating, collaborating with product, establishing MVP.
- Learning and teaching: chapter reviews, research, meetups, coaching and mentoring developers.
- Enabling: working on shared libraries, contributing to open source content, defining, documenting and evolving best practices.
- Avoiding pitfalls: identifying risks in delivering complex features and proposing ways to mitigate them.
- Extra contributions: collaborating across teams to achieve organizational objectives, even beyond scope.
- Staff‑level experience: proven track record as a staff engineer, handling large‑scale incidents and system failures, producing stronger architectures and runbooks.
- Systems thinking: deep proficiency in at least one relevant tech stack and systems‑level mindset for complex full‑stack architectures.
- Modern tooling: hands‑on experience with AI‑assisted coding and deployment strategies to boost efficiency without sacrificing quality.
- Communication: ability to simplify complex technical tradeoffs for stakeholders and peers, and proactively identify and communicate risks.
- Principled but pragmatic technical lead, with strong opinions that are weakly held and able to pivot when data shows a better path.
- Continuous force multiplier – solving problems and building systems, tools, and people around you.
- Owner & advocate – act with urgency and walk backwards from the customer, treating the codebase, business strategy and stakeholders as your own.
