Senior Software Engineer - Databases, SRE | Canada | Remote

Grafana Labs is a fully remote, open‑source observability company that supports over 7,000 customers worldwide. We are scaling fast and rely on a global, collaborative culture.

The Opportunity

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer – SRE to support our highest‑value Grafana Cloud customers by increasing the reliability of our Cloud databases that run on Mimir, Loki, Tempo, and Pyroscope. These databases are delivered as a SaaS product from AWS, GCP, and Azure across all regions.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Partner closely with product engineering squads (embedded model)
  • Own production reliability for high‑SLA and complex customer environments
  • Design and implement automation to scale our reliability practices
  • Define and evolve per‑tenant SLOs and reliability models
  • Proactively reduce SLO burn to prevent repeat incidents
  • Serve as a primary escalation point and on‑call for relevant incidents
  • Lead customer‑impacting incident response and post‑incident reviews
  • Contribute to design docs and code reviews
  • Influence feature design to ensure production scalability and operability
  • Build automation to eliminate toil where needed
  • Improve alert quality and reduce noisy escalations

This role includes an on‑call component that we take seriously. We provide balanced coverage across regions to keep on‑call health high.

We invest heavily in developer productivity. You can use modern AI coding assistants as part of your daily workflow, backed by a company‑funded usage budget.

What Makes You a Great Fit
  • Regular 1:1s with manager and colleagues
  • Reviewing and creating SLOs and investigating ways to reduce budget burn
  • Improving observability of customers within their environments
  • Designing and implementing solutions for reliability and scalability
  • Implementing fault‑tolerant design patterns across the service lifecycle
  • Collaborating with Engineering Leaders to help define product strategy, roadmaps, and technical designs
  • Participating in PR reviews and collaborating on Design Docs
  • Teaching others about Site Reliability Engineering and communicating best practices early in development
  • Participating in Incident Response, including investigation through resolution and PIRs, and communicating with customers
Requirements
  • 6+ years engineering experience, 3+ in SRE/CRE/production engineering.
  • Strong Kubernetes experience in AWS, GCP, or Azure, and familiarity with infrastructure‑as‑code tooling (Helm, Terraform, Jsonnet, etc.).
  • Experience operating multi‑tenant systems in production.
  • Strong experience designing and implementing SLOs.
  • Experience with one or more programming languages (Go, Python, Java, etc.).
  • Experience with Linux operating systems internals, networking, cloud storage, and scaling.
  • Excellent problem‑solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience with calm, blame‑free Incident Response, following up on actions, and writing high‑quality PIRs.
  • Ability to reason about performance, scaling, and failure modes.
  • Comfortable working within an engineering team that values autonomy and self‑direction.
  • Ability to partner deeply with product engineering teams.
  • Intellectually curious, transparent, action‑oriented, and kind.
