Job description About Lesson Up

Lesson Up is a leading platform and educational software-as-a-service (SaaS) for teachers. We equip teachers with a range of innovative tools and resources that help them to create engaging and effective learning experiences. Our mission is to empower teachers to create the most engaging, joyful, and effective learning moments. Our ambition is to support 1 million teachers worldwide and to make a positive impact on the education of the next generations.

About

the role

We are looking for a senior Platform Automation Engineer to own our cloud platform and supercharge developer velocity. In this role, your center of gravity is infrastructure, Dev Ops, and platform engineering.

You will tackle a dual mission: owning and evolving our core GCP production infrastructure, tackling technical debt, managing cloud resources, and ensuring production reliability, while radically shortening the time between a developer writing code and knowing whether it works.

You will not be authoring daily QA tests; our developers and QA engineers own the actual test suites. Instead, your focus is platform enablement. You will build, scale, and maintain the underlying cloud infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, and per-PR ephemerl environments that allow those tests to run flawlessly, empowering the team to deploy reliable code to production at high velocity.

What you’ll do
  • Own Production Infrastructure & GCP

    Roadmap:

Take ownership of our GCP environment. Tackle pending technical debt, optimise cloud resource allocation, and ensure production systems are secure, performant, cost-effective, and built to scale.

  • Provide Per-PR Ephemeral Environments: Architect and manage ephemerl environments that allow engineers to spin up fully functional instances of our app for every pull request, making testing and QA review fast, isolated, and painless.

  • Run E2E Tests Frequently and Reliably: Own the operation and execution of our testing frameworks (Playwright, Jest, Cucumber) in CI. Focus on wiring tests into ephemerl environments, optimising parallelisation, and ruthlessly reducing flakiness so developers get immediate, trustworthy feedback.

  • Optimise CI/CD & Developer Workflows: Streamline build, test, and deployment pipelines to minimise developer wait times and establish robust release mechanisms.

  • Enable the Engineering Team: Provide the APIs, data-preparation tools, and CI/CD integrations that developers and QA need to write, maintain, and trust their own test suites seamlessly.

Job requirements

A little bit more about you

  • Experience: 8+ years of experience primarily focused in a Platform, Dev Ops, or SRE role, with a strong track record of setting up developer tooling, CI/CD pipelines, and managing production cloud infrastructure.

  • Cloud & Infrastructure: Strong proficiency with GCP (Google Cloud Platform) and infrastructure-as-code (IaC). Prior experience with Terraform is a plus. You know how to build, secure, and maintain scalable production environments.

  • Test Infrastructure Operations: Fluency in operating and scaling E2E testing frameworks (like Playwright and Jest) within CI pipelines. You do not need to be a deep test author; we need your expertise in pipeline wiring, test parallelisation, and flake reduction. Familiarity with Cucumber for BDD and Storybook is a plus.

  • API & Data Savvy: Comfort working with GraphQL APIs and MongoDB databases.

  • Senior Ownership: Ability to work autonomously, balance production infrastructure reliability with internal developer tools, and act as a true platform enabler for the wider engineering team.

  • Resident in NL (fully remote work or relocation is not possible)
  • At least 2 years experience as a senior
  • Capable of work independently
  • You’re a data-driven and pragmatic decision-maker
  • You’re open-minded, kind, autonomous, and proactive

What we offer you

  • A fantastic job at our office in The Hague, with the flexibility to work from home occasionally
  • A competitive salary between €5000 - €6000 per month (based on 40h)
  • A work week of 32, 36 or 40 hours a week. Whatever you prefer!
  • A laptop
  • NS business card or €0,25 per km
  • Personal Learning & Development Budget
  • Unlimited access to Open Up to work on your mental health
  • Retirement savings with ASR
  • Free lunch, drinks & snacks at the office
  • Great outings throughout the year like rooftop terrace parties, beach bbq’s, game nights and monthly drinks
