About Voyis
Voyis designs and manufactures high performance underwater optical sensors (lasers, cameras, lights) for underwater vehicles that expand capability and enhance understanding in underwater surveys and exploration. Our products have enabled our customers to survey more than 10,000km of ocean floor across all 7 continents, helping people better understand those remote, challenging environments.
Our mission is to push the limits of what’s possible subsea and enable every underwater vehicle to see the depths like we see the surface. All our products are proudly designed and built in Waterloo.
The RoleAsan Embedded Systems Test Engineer at Voyis, you will play a critical role in improving how weautomate, test, validate, andreleasethe software that powers ourunderwatercamera and laser systems.
You willdrive and ownquality across the full Voyisstackby validatingentire systems includingembedded compute, real-time sensorhardwareand backend services– all with a focus on building test automation.
The role is heavily focused on integration level testing and ensuring release reliability across the range of SW/FW/HW configurations in our core products.
You will also contributetovalidatingutility libraries and internal tools that support both software development and production operations, including calibration, data management, and device maintenance.
- 8+ years of experience in test automation, embedded systems validation, and systems integration testing in safety-critical or hardware-centric product environments (e.g., automotive, industrial, robotics, sensors)
- Proven track record architecting and building HIL test platforms from the ground up
- Advanced embedded systems background: firmware on ARM Cortex platforms, peripheral-level debugging, and board bring-up — able to test at the level the firmware is written
- Strong development skills in C/C++, and scripting languages such as Python, disciplined use of git, and professional software development standards
- Demonstrated experience mentoring engineers, leading peer reviews, and establishing team-wide testing standards and processes
- Own the end-to-end test strategy for Voyisproducts — defining and implementing manual and automated approaches spanning functional, regression, integration, performance, fault-injection, and compatibility testing
- Architect, build, and continuously improve HIL test environments that validate software and firmware directly on physical sensors and embedded systems
- Develop monitoring and observability services to track mission-critical metrics — system latency, data throughput, data integrity — ensuring high-fidelity real-time visualization and sensor accuracy
- Lead root cause analysis on escaped defects using structured techniques, reproduce issues in controlled test environments, and strengthen automated coverage to prevent recurrence
- Mentor and develop junior QA engineers
- Champion a quality-first engineering culture, partnering with firmware, software, and hardware teams to shift testing left and build testability into designs from the start
- Experience designing andmaintainingCI/CD-integrated firmware and software regression pipelines (Git Lab), including structured test case libraries, pass/fail criteria, coverage tracking, and reporting dashboards (Prometheus, Grafana)
- Experience setting up and managing self-hosted runners and platform matrix builds (Linux x64/arm
64, Windows) - Experience with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Buildah)
- Experience with infrastructure as code (Ansible, etc.) including playbooks, roles, and automation workflows
- Hands‑on hardware testing experience with some debugging knowledge using an oscilloscope or multimeter
- Comfortable with Linux and/or Windows systems administration and debugging infrastructure issues
This is primarily an in-person role based at our Waterloo headquarters. Some flexibility for remote work is available; however, fully in person is preferred and a minimum of four days on-site is expected to support close collaboration with the team who is nearly fulltime in office.
The Perks- 5 weeks of total time off, flexible work…
