This Embedded Systems Firmware Engineer role is a hybrid position based in the Edmonton, AB area,, with an option for some work from home. The engineer will design, implement, and test embedded firmware for medical or wellness devices, ensuring reliability, safety, and performance. Daily responsibilities include developing low-level drivers and application code, integrating sensors and communication interfaces, and collaborating with electrical engineers on hardware–software integration.

The role involves debugging and optimizing firmware, writing documentation, and participating in design reviews to support regulatory and quality requirements. The engineer will also assist in building prototypes, validating functionality in lab and field environments, and supporting cross-functional teams working on brain health technologies.

Strong embedded software and firmware development skills, including experience with microcontrollers, real-time systems, and C/C++/Python.

• Foundational knowledge of electrical engineering and electronics to collaborate effectively on circuit design, sensor integration, and hardware bring-up.
• Experience with Internet of Things (IoT) concepts and software development practices, such as connectivity protocols, data transmission, and version control.
• Ability to design, test, and debug embedded systems using tools like oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and hardware debuggers.
• RTOS experience (FreeRTOS or Zephyr preferred)
• Experience with SPI, I2C, UART and BLE
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Familiarity with medical device or regulated product development, quality standards, or safety-critical systems is an asset.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary, hybrid work environment.
• Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a proactive approach to learning new tools and technologies.
• Nice to have: EEG experience, Dev Ops, P.Eng or on-track for registration with APEGA.
