Senior Software Engineer; PHP/Symfony

True9 is an eleven-year-old, independent technology consultancy based in Saltaire, West Yorkshire.

We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer (PHP/Symfony) who enjoys working on established, business-critical systems - and taking the time to improve them properly.

Much of our work involves long-lived platforms that have delivered value for years. The challenge comes from improving structure, reducing risk and enabling teams to move faster with confidence.

If you enjoy untangling complex systems, improving legacy codebases without burning them down, and leaving software in a better state than you found it, you'll feel at home here.

• Writing clean, maintainable and well-tested PHP (primarily Symfony and Laravel)
• Working hands-on with legacy codebases: refactoring, improving boundaries and raising quality
• Owning areas of the platform and improving them incrementally
• Contributing to architectural decisions and refactoring strategies
• Improving developer experience through better tooling, tests and workflows
• Collaborating closely with delivery and QA throughout the lifecycle

We believe great software comes from people who are supported, trusted and given room to grow.

• Have time and space to improve the codebase, not just add features
• Be encouraged to take ownership and influence technical direction
• Learn through real-world problems, not artificial exercises
• Share knowledge and mentor others (and be mentored yourself)

• A supportive, low-ego environment where people are trusted to do the right thing
• Pragmatic, delivery-focused engineering
• Clear communication and collaboration across engineering, delivery and QA

Our office is based in Salts Mill, Saltaire - a historic, light-filled space that's become a natural hub for collaboration, focus and shared problem-solving. We value the energy and connection that come from spending time together, while recognising that remote working remains useful for focused work and flexibility.

This is an important role within the business, working closely with some of our largest clients. We're looking for someone who values spending time with the wider team and can join us in our Saltaire office a couple of days a week.

• Have strong experience with PHP, OOP and modern frameworks
• Are comfortable working with large or legacy systems
• Care about quality, testing and long-term maintainability
• Prefer autonomy, trust and thoughtful decision-making
• Enjoy working with people who value clarity over ego

• Competitive salary ( £50,000 - £65,000 ) with annual performance-based reviews
• Hybrid role, office-based with remote working flexibility
• 34 days off, including Bank Holidays, plus your birthday off every year
• Home office setup - we'll provide the right equipment to get you started
• A £500 annual personal development budget for learning that matters to you
• A genuinely supportive, down-to-earth team
• On-site parking and direct train and bus routes
• 2x offsite whole-team activity days per year
• 6x in-office whole-team days, held every other month
• 6x virtual whole-team catch-up events, held every other month
• A vibrant and innovative work culture where your ideas genuinely matter
