Senior​/Principal Backend Engineer AI Search - Remote

This is a Senior / Staff Backend Engineer role on the AI search team of a fully remote company.

Looking for a senior or staff backend engineer to build AI-assisted answers into a search product used by a large audience. You will own this end to end, from first design to production, in a backend spanning Perl, Go and Node.js.

• Build AI-assisted answers into search, from retrieval and prompting to evaluation and rollout
• Own your work end to end: design, implementation, deployment, monitoring and iteration
• Work across backend services written in Perl, Go and Node.js
• Set up and run eval frameworks so changes to models and prompts are measured, not guessed
• Make product and technical tradeoffs and explain them clearly to the team
• Mentor senior engineers and raise the bar on how the team builds

• 7+ years building backend systems that power a user-facing product
• Hands-on with AI agent tooling: eval frameworks, RAG pipelines, prompt engineering
• Fundamental understanding of complex data structures and algorithms
• Strong in at least one of Perl, Go or Node.js, and happy to work across all three
• Experience mentoring senior engineers
• Good product acumen, you understand what users need and can make tradeoffs when necessary
• Clear written and spoken communication, you work well in a distributed team
• A track record of owning systems end to end

• Compensation:
  Up to $185k per year, the same regardless of where you live
