Our client is looking for a visionary and highly experienced Senior Automotive Software Architect to lead the design of complex software systems for their future vehicle platforms. This is a fully remote position, allowing you to contribute from anywhere in South Africa. You will be responsible for defining the high-level software architecture, ensuring scalability, reliability, maintainability, and security across various vehicle domains, including infotainment, connectivity, autonomous driving, and powertrain control.
This role requires a deep understanding of software engineering principles, automotive software standards (such as AUTOSAR), and emerging technologies. You will guide software development teams, make critical architectural decisions, and collaborate with system engineers and product managers to translate complex requirements into robust software solutions. The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker with a passion for innovation in the automotive space and a proven ability to lead technical direction.
Define and evolve the overall software architecture for automotive electronic control units (ECUs) and vehicle systems. Establish software design patterns, coding standards, and best practices for embedded software development. Ensure the software architecture supports key automotive requirements, including functional safety (ISO 26262), cybersecurity, and real-time performance. Collaborate with domain experts to decompose system requirements into software components and interfaces. Guide and mentor software development teams on architectural principles and implementation strategies.
Evaluate and select appropriate software technologies, frameworks, and tools for automotive applications. Oversee the integration of software components and ensure system-level coherence. Identify and mitigate technical risks associated with software architecture and design. Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, and evolving automotive software standards (e.g., AUTOSAR, ASPICE). Communicate architectural vision and decisions effectively to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field. Minimum of 10 years of experience in software development, with at least 5 years in an architectural role, preferably within the automotive industry. Proven experience in designing and implementing complex embedded software architectures for automotive ECUs. Deep understanding of AUTOSAR architecture and its components. Strong knowledge of real-time operating systems (RTOS) and embedded Linux.
Familiarity with functional safety (ISO 26262) and automotive cybersecurity principles. Experience with software development processes and methodologies (e.g., Agile, Waterfall, ASPICE). Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and strategic thinking skills. Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to influence and guide technical teams in a remote setting. Experience with various communication protocols (CAN, Ethernet) and diagnostic protocols (UDS).
Our client offers an exceptional compensation package, comprehensive health benefits, and significant opportunities for professional development and impact. As a fully remote role, you will enjoy unparalleled flexibility and autonomy while working on the forefront of automotive software innovation. This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of mobility from anywhere in South Africa.
