DevOps Engineer II at Smartsheet - Remote Bulgaria

This role is explicitly remote from Bulgaria
, meaning you must be legally eligible to work in Bulgaria on an ongoing basis. This is not a location-flexible, nomad-friendly posting — Smartsheet requires a fixed country of residence and likely structures payroll, taxes, and reporting around Bulgarian employment law.
Timezone considerations: Bulgaria operates on EET/EEST (UTC+2/UTC+3). While the job doesn't specify core hours, participation in an on-call rotation strongly implies you need to be consistently reachable in a compatible timezone — likely Eastern European or nearby. Traveling to significantly different timezones (e.g., Southeast Asia or the Americas) for extended periods would conflict with on-call responsibilities.
Visa and legal note: The posting explicitly states you must be "legally eligible to work in Bulgaria on an ongoing basis." This rules out tourist-visa arrangements. Digital nomad visas in nearby countries (e.g., Greece, Croatia) would not satisfy this requirement unless you also maintain Bulgarian work eligibility.
- Sofia cost of living: Bulgaria has a low cost of living, so a competitive local tech salary can go far domestically.
- Travel within Europe: EU freedom of movement makes short leisure trips easy, but extended remote work abroad may violate employment terms.
In summary: this role suits someone based in Bulgaria who wants remote flexibility within their home country, not a nomadic lifestyle across borders.

We are seeking a Dev Ops Engineer II to join the Edge and Developer Experience team
. Our team collaboratively operates Smartsheet's high-performance edge proxy platform and drives the adoption of internal engineering tooling. The edge proxy serves as the entry point for all traffic across Smartsheet's commercial and FedRAMP-authorized US Government environments. The team supports the lifecycle of this platform: from maintaining proxy configurations, to provisioning the multi-region AWS EKS infrastructure it runs on, to assisting with observability.
Beyond the edge layer, the team also drives the integration of internal developer tooling — from a developer portal (IDP) to standardized CI/CD pipelines — that improves the engineering experience and velocity across the company.
You will work remotely from Bulgaria and report to one of our engineering leaders in Bulgaria.
You Will:- Contribute to the edge proxy platform:
Assist in maintaining, upgrading, and extending a high-performance reverse proxy. This includes writing Go and Python automation, managing container images on hardened Linux bases, and working with CDN and traffic management capabilities. - Build and maintain cloud infrastructure as code:
Implement Terraform/Terragrunt modules and live environment configurations for EKS clusters, load balancers, IAM roles, and supporting AWS services. - Operate Kubernetes clusters:
Assist in managing multi-region EKS deployments via Git Ops workflows (e.g., FluxCD, ArgoCD) and Helm charts. - Support CI/CD pipelines:
Help design, maintain, and improve shared Git Lab CI/CD pipeline templates used across team repositories, embedding Dev Sec Ops guardrails. - Automate operational toil:
Build tooling for tasks such as container image patching, EKS AMI rotation, and automated…
