Job Description

Job Summary:

The Bus Driver safely transports associates and approved visitors between the airstrip, camp, and work areas at a remote Nunavut site. The role emphasizes passenger safety, regulatory compliance, and winter/remote driving proficiency, while supporting basic site logistics as required. This position is safety‑sensitive and operates under Canadian National Safety Code (NSC) standards and Nunavut legislation.

This position requires fly-in/fly-out travel from Edmonton, Alberta or Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, to the project site in Nunavut, with potential for weather-related delays or logistical challenges. This is a safety-sensitive position requiring drug and alcohol testing as a condition of employment.

Key Responsibilities:

Passenger Transport & Onroad Safety

  • Operate company buses to transport passengers on scheduled and ad-hoc routes in Arctic conditions (ice, snow, low visibility).
  • Drive defensively and to road/weather conditions; maintain safe speed, following distance, and stopping practices.
  • Confirm authorized rider lists and support orderly boarding/unloading; ensure aisles and exits remain clear.
  • Secure or verify securement of passenger baggage and equipment as required.
  • Conduct and document daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections in accordance with applicable standards and company procedures (including defect reporting).
  • Maintain the vehicle in a clean, safe operating condition.
  • Ensure emergency and preparedness equipment is present and serviceable (e.g., first aid kit, warning triangles/flares, spill kit, cold-weather supplies).
  • Comply with applicable commercial driving requirements (e.g., hours-of-service rules) and maintain required records (paper or electronic) per policy.
  • Record hours worked and submit required operational documentation as directed.
  • Participate in incident/hazard reporting and immediately escalate hazards, vehicle issues, or near-misses.
  • Provide courteous, professional service and clear safety communication to passengers.
  • Relay schedule changes or client expectations to dispatch/management and support operational coordination.
  • Provide light logistics support when not driving (e.g., baggage shuttle coordination, signage support), without compromising regulatory rest requirements.
  • Perform general labour tasks around camp as directed by the Camp/Operations Manager.

Physical Demands:

  • Sit for extended periods while driving; frequent entry/exit of vehicle in icy conditions.
  • Lift, carry, push, or pull items up to 40–50 lbs (e.g., baggage, supplies).
  • Walk, bend, kneel, and climb steps as required; work with hands above shoulder height occasionally.
  • Work in varying environmental conditions, including extreme cold, wind, and low light.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in remote environments.
  • Cultural sensitivity and ability to work respectfully with diverse teams, including Indigenous and Inuit staff.
  • Valid Class 2 driver’s license (or equivalent recognized by Nunavut) appropriate for the bus being operated (manufacturer seating capacity >10, including driver).
  • Air brake endorsement (Q/Z, as applicable) if operating vehicles equipped with air brakes; completion of required training/testing.
  • Clean driver abstract and a minimum of one (1) year of safe driving experience.
  • Ability to pass a Criminal Background Check or Vulnerable Sector Screen.
