Highway Maintenance Operative

About The Role

We are looking for a Highways Maintenance Operative to join our UKCS Scotland business, based in Dalston
. This is a hands‑on role working at the heart of our highways operations, helping to maintain and improve the local road network to ensure it remains safe, efficient and reliable for all users.

As part of a collaborative and safety‑focused team, you will play a key role in delivering essential maintenance activities, supporting both planned works and emergency responses. This position offers the opportunity to work across a wide range of tasks, contributing to the upkeep of critical infrastructure within the community.

• Carrying out highway repairs and general maintenance activities across the network
• Undertaking minor civil engineering works, including kerbing, drainage installation and associated tasks
• Operating equipment to cleanse and maintain highway drainage systems, including jetting and gully maintenance
• Supporting winter maintenance operations, including driving an HGV gritter when required
• Installing, maintaining and removing traffic management systems to ensure safe working environments
• Assisting with emergency response activities across the network
• Completing point of work risk assessments and ensuring all activities are delivered safely and in line with company procedures
• Identifying and reporting any defects in equipment, plant or highway infrastructure
• Supporting a culture of continuous improvement through open communication and sharing of best practice
• Completing all required documentation and submitting updates to the Supervisor in a timely manner
• Engaging positively with members of the public and stakeholders at all times

We are looking for a committed and reliable individual with experience in highways maintenance who takes pride in delivering high‑quality work and maintaining a strong focus on safety.

• HGV Class 2 (Category
  
  C) licence
• Valid CPC qualification
• Previous experience within a highways maintenance or similar environment
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team
• Flexibility to work outside normal hours and participate in standby or call‑out arrangements

• Telehandler qualification
• Excavator or JCB 3CX competency (under 5 tonnes)
• Traffic Management qualification (Sector 12D T1/T2)
• Manual handling training
