GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY

The Driver Examiner is responsible for examination work involving assessing applicants for driver’s licences in accordance with standards established with respect to knowledge, vision, driving, and physical capabilities. This includes testing applicants for all classes of driver’s licences (i.e., Class 1 to Class
7) and endorsements (e.g., air brake, school bus, motorcycle). The Driver Examiner is responsible for coaching, educating, and encouraging unsuccessful road test applicants based on the driving skills demonstrated during the road test to increase their chance of success on the next road test and ensure they have a positive experience, even if they were not successful. The Driver Examiner is responsible for completing interviews, delivering Traffic Safety Education presentations, and assessing driver safety when SGI Driver Programs deems necessary.

Work is performed at large examination centres, small examination centres, or from mobile units.

Driver Examinations

• Administers and conducts written and oral examinations, vision screening, road tests for Class 1 through 7, and endorsements (e.g., air brake, school bus, heavy trailer, motorcycle).
• Evaluates test results and counsels applicants on areas for improvement.
• Conducts visual inspections of vehicles used for testing for signs of safety issues.
• Observes applicants for signs and symptoms that may indicate a medical examination is required before a licence is issued.
• Creates routes for road testing in various locations.
• Responds to customer concerns regarding examinations and interviews.
• Provides input into ministerial inquiries.
