Police Recruits attend a 24‑week POST‑certified Police Officer Training Academy. You will be trained in criminal law enforcement techniques, first aid, and physical conditioning. Upon successful completion of the academy, you will be promoted to the position of Police Officer. Police Recruits are sworn in as Police Officers at a base salary of $8,313.07 - $10,107.07 per month; this does not include incentive pay which you may be eligible to earn, such as bilingual pay, education pay, shift differential, etc.
All new Police Officers complete a comprehensive Field Training Officer program, which provides close training and assistance in the field.
- High school diploma or recognized equivalent
- Minimum age 20.5 years at time of application
- Valid CA Class C driver’s license with acceptable driving record
- Uncorrected vision of at least 20/80 each eye, corrected to 20/20 with glasses or contact lenses, and normal color vision
- Legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law
- Proficiency in English; bilingual skills are highly desirable
- Some college coursework in criminal justice or related field is desirable
- Recent and efficient written examination scores, if applicable
All appointments to this position are subject to a satisfactory background investigation conducted by the Ontario Police Department.
- Passing of a polygraph test
- Successful completion of a post‑offer medical exam, including drug screen
- 12‑month probationary period
- Review of traffic citations, arrests, convictions, substance abuse history, credit history, and thefts from employers
- Verification of educational history, residences, work history, military service records, and financial management
- Evaluation of criminal, driving, and insurance records (felony convictions will prohibit consideration)
Applicants must complete a City of Ontario employment application online. Applications and supplemental questions will be screened for minimum qualifications.
The Entry‑Level Law Enforcement Test Battery is a six‑section multiple‑choice exam. Applicants must achieve a T‑score of 45 or higher. The exam covers spelling, vocabulary, clarity, and reading comprehension.
Only candidates with a T‑score 45 or higher will advance to a panel interview that evaluates experience, training, problem‑solving, interpersonal skills, communication, interest, employment, education, criminal, and driving history.
A pass/fail test evaluating physical competence through five events: body drag, obstacle course, chain‑link fence climb, solid fence climb, and 500‑yard run.
