Collections Specialist I – Columbia Southern University
Job Title: Collections Specialist I
Department: Student Accounts
Reports to: Supervisor
FLSA: Non‑Exempt
Hours: Monday through Thursday 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Onsite;
Friday 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM, Remote (extended hours when requested)
Compensation: $16.00 hourly (final amount determined by experience, qualifications, and company guidelines)
Job SummaryThe Collections Specialist monitors student account records for negative and delinquent balances and ensures timely resolution.
Essential Job Tasks- Research and communicate accurate account information to students via phone, text, email, and chat.
- Provide excellent customer service to internal and external stakeholders.
- Negotiate payment plans and set up payments so students can continue enrollment.
- Process payments obtained during daily correspondence.
- Call or email customers to resolve account balances.
- Document interactions properly within student files.
- Assist students with enrollments by submitting enrollment forms or explaining online submission procedures.
- Provide department backup as needed.
- Promote, maintain, and enhance workplace culture within Student Accounts and the university.

Knowledge- English Language – Structure, content, spelling, grammar, and composition rules.
- Academic Processes – University guidelines, course descriptions, and academic terminology.
- Clerical – Office administrative procedures, file and record management, typing, and other office tasks.
- Computer – Basic computer operations, word processing, web browsing, Microsoft Office, and Excel.
- Mathematics – Basic math skills.
- Critical Thinking – Apply logic and reasoning to analyze information and solve problems.
- Reading Comprehension – Understand written sentences and paragraphs in work‑related documents.
- Research – Locate key facts and information for learning and decision‑making.
- Interpersonal Skills – Communicate and interact effectively with people, aware of social perceptions.
- Time Management – Self‑manage time to accomplish tasks.
- Attention to Detail – Thoroughness and accuracy in completing tasks, ensuring all aspects are reviewed.

- Oral Expression – Communicate information and ideas verbally.
High School Diploma or GED.
Equipment Used- Office equipment: computers, telephones, printers.
- Software:
Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe, Outlook, Anthology, Ring Central, Chat Beacon, and internal database. - Reliable, secure internet is required.
