Job Information- Job Title: Academic Advisor I
- Department: Academic Advising Center
- Reports to: Team Lead, Academic Advising Center
- FLSA Status: Exempt
- Hours: Monday–Thursday 8:00 AM–5:00 PM onsite;
Friday 8:00 AM–5:00 PM remote (extended hours when requested) - Location: Orange Beach, AL
- Compensation: $40,000 annually, with adjustments based on experience and qualifications
Under the direction of a Team Lead, the Academic Advisor I works alongside the Academic Advising staff to provide educational guidance and assistance for students enrolled by planning schedules, recommending courses, and determining appropriate educational solutions.
Responsibilities- Serve as the central point of contact for an assigned student population and refer to other offices and agencies, encouraging student engagement with university resources, curriculum offerings, policies, and procedures.
- Provide guidance throughout a student's degree program in areas such as success strategies and academic program changes.
- Utilize various communication methods, including phone, email, SMS, chat, and video calls, to engage with students.
- Proactively contact an assigned student population in accordance with university priorities.
- Identify students’ goals and promote successful achievement by developing student-centered relationships and academic plans, monitoring progress.
- Apply university guidelines, academic terminology, and acceptable advising practices by providing accurate information, ensuring compliance with policies, and demonstrating proficiency in advising tools and software.
- Advise at-risk students for academic success by exploring alternatives to overcome barriers to persistence or graduation.
- Comply with FERPA and other applicable laws concerning student information.
- Promote, maintain, and enhance workplace culture within the Academic Advising Center and the university.
- Complete at least two hours of professional development training per year.
- English Language – understanding of structure, meaning, spelling, composition, and grammar.
- Administrative – knowledge of office procedures and systems such as word processing, file management, transcription, form design, and workplace terminology.
- Computer – basic computer processes including word processing, web browsing, Microsoft Office, and basic Excel.
- Active Listening – give full attention, understand points, ask questions, avoid interrupting.
- Critical Thinking – use logic and reasoning to evaluate alternative solutions, conclusions, or problem approaches.
- Reading Comprehension – understand written sentences and paragraphs in work-related documents.
- Social Perceptiveness – be aware of others’ reactions and understand why they respond.
- Time Management – manage one's own time to accomplish tasks.
- Attention to Detail – ensure thoroughness and accuracy in tasks.
- Written Comprehension – read and understand written information.
- Written Expression – communicate information in writing so others understand.
- Oral Comprehension – listen and understand spoken information.
- Oral Expression – communicate in speaking so others understand.
- Service Orientation – actively seek ways to help people.
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Experience with diverse students or customers and understanding their unique needs preferred.
- Experience in problem-solving and conflict resolution, handling sensitive situations with professionalism and confidentiality preferred.
- Office equipment: computers, telephones, printers.
- Software:
Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Blackboard, internal database software. - Secure, reliable internet required.
