As a PRN Nuclear Medicine Technologist
, you perform tests for diagnosis and/or medical research by preparing and administering radiopharmaceuticals to patients, followed by imaging with high-level equipment to record images of the radioactive material in the body. This may include Nuclear Medicine examinations and/or Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and PET/CT examinations. The Nuclear Medicine Technologist is responsible for performing correct nuclear examinations while maintaining a safe radioactive environment and will document radiopharmaceutical administration and radiation exposure in accordance with federal/state laws, regulations, or institutional policy.
The role requires flexibility with availability as a per-diem technologist, responding to coverage requests due to absences or vacations, and covering at least one shift in a 30-day period.
- Administer ionizing radiation in conjunction with radiopharmaceuticals to obtain diagnostic exams as ordered by the physician, following applicable laws and safety standards. May include administration of non-narcotic medication as indicated by provider orders.
- Demonstrate independent competency in radiopharmaceutical administration, including starting and discontinuing peripheral IVs and administration through other vascular access points (ports, CVLs, PICC lines) as indicated. Utilize safe techniques with protective shielding and maintain records of radioisotope receipt, use, storage, and disposal in accordance with state and federal regulations. Demonstrate competency with Nuclear Medicine equipment and, if applicable, PET/CT equipment. Communicate effectively to address concerns, solve problems, and resolve conflicts.
- Maintain quality levels to meet or exceed customer expectations through process improvement and a team-oriented approach. Complete annual and ongoing education and site-specific competencies/in-services as designated by leadership. Maintain HIPAA confidentiality. Demonstrate proficiency with Akumin’s EMR systems, PACS, and DICOM for image sharing and interpretation.
- Effectively communicate with patients and radiologists. Train and orient new technologists and patient coordinators as needed.

- High School Diploma or equivalent;
Associate’s Degree or equivalent experience preferred. - NMTCB or ARRT (N) certification.
- State license, if applicable, required.
- CPR Certification, BLS from AHA or ARC; ACLS where applicable.
- Valid state driver’s license, as applicable.
- Ability to work at several locations.
- Strong customer service, organizational, multi-tasking, and critical thinking skills.
- Basic knowledge of computer applications and programs.
- Local travel may be required.
- Associate’s Degree or equivalent experience.
- 1–2 years of experience in Nuclear Medicine procedures and studies.
The employee may be exposed to outside weather conditions when transporting patients on mobile units and to strong magnetic fields. May be exposed to blood/body fluids and infectious disease. The following summarizes typical expectations:
- More than 50% of the time: sit, stand, walk; repetitive movements of hands, arms, and legs; see, speak, and hear for patient communication.
- Less than 50% of the time: stoop, kneel, crawl; climb and balance; carry and lift to assist with transfers or exams.
