Role on the Team
The Physician Assistant in the Department of Surgery will independently and collaboratively manage and coordinate inpatient care for the Trauma and Acute Care Surgery Service. This includes patient assessment, care planning, and discharge coordination for general surgery and surgical intensive care unit patients, participation in shift sign‑offs, trauma resuscitations, and surgical consultations.
Duties- Assess health needs, plan and evaluate care of all patients on the general surgery services and in the surgical intensive care unit.
- Participate in inpatient sign‑out at the beginning and end of each shift.
- Follow up with the General Surgery teams, residents, and attending physicians.
- Engage in trauma resuscitations and perform surgical consultations on potential general surgery patients.
- Coordinate scheduling of surgeries and interventional procedures, and oversee patient discharge including discharge summaries, instructions, and medications.
- Triage phone calls and critically review laboratories, following up on results with patients and medical staff.
- Obtain comprehensive medical histories, perform initial and periodic physical examinations/assessments, and manage treatment of hospitalized patients with advanced clinical judgement.
- Maintain compliant documentation and engage in professional development and competency validation under joint supervision of department leaders.
- Current, active, and unrestricted licensed Physician Assistant in California.
- Current DEA number and BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications; ATLS within six months of hire.
- Practice agreements completed and on file in the Department and ability to obtain UCIMC Allied Health Professional Privileges before hire.
- Completion of HIPAA, TB screening, and other required training, with adherence to privacy and security policies.
- Excellent customer‑service skills, diplomacy, flexibility, and clear communication with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare personnel.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including preparation of clear medical reports and progress notes.
- Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload and to be trained in specialized medical equipment and procedures.
- Proficiency with Windows and MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Experience in Trauma/Critical Care settings.
- Knowledge of surgical procedures including scrubbing, draping, retracting, exposure, clamping, ligating, and suturing.
- Bilingual in Spanish and/or Vietnamese.
