Your Role on the Team:
The position of Sr Physician Assistant in the Department of Surgery requires a highly competent, independent yet team-oriented individual who will be immersed in the management and coordination of all inpatient care of surgical patients, primarily located at a new hospital in Irvine, California
. The surgical patients will include general surgery and specialty surgical services, on all levels of care, including the intensive care unit. Inpatient surgical services include colorectal surgery, ENT, general surgery, gynecology, hand surgery, minimally invasive surgery, plastic surgery, surgical oncology, thoracic, urology, vascular. Duties will include consults and inpatient care and management, evaluating care, ordering diagnostics and creating a treatment plan.

The PA will participate in inpatient sign out/hand-off at the beginning and end of shift, round and communicate with the surgery teams/residents/attending physicians, and be responsible for surgical consultations and resuscitations from the ED and ICU. The PA will coordinate procedures (including scheduling operations and other procedures) and follow-up, admit and discharge patients, and manage admission H&Ps, orders, discharge summaries, instructions, and medications when appropriate.

The PA will triage calls, review critical labs, follow up results, obtain medical histories, perform initial and daily exams, and support trauma-informed care. The PA should demonstrate advanced medical knowledge, clinical/technical competence, sound clinical judgment, professional communication, timely documentation, and ongoing professional development. The PA will participate in comprehensive inpatient care and provide multi-disciplinary care coordination, education, monitoring, and communication with patients and referring physicians.

In addition, PAs may assist in the operating room, collaborating with surgeons and the surgical team to ensure high-quality patient care throughout surgical procedures. This position is represented by the University Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE) union.

What It Takes to be Successful
  • Must be a current, active, and unrestricted licensed in the State of California. Practice agreements completed and on file in Department. Must have an active National Provider Identifier (NPI) number and a current DEA number. Current BLS and ACLS certification. Within six months of hire, ATLS certification. HIPAA and other required training. Annual TB screening and any applicable tests to meet JCAHO requirements.

    NCCPA certification at time of hire and maintained throughout career t have an NPI prior to employment start date and meet current Medicare requirements for billing. At least 2 years of Physician Assistant clinical experience. Ability to communicate medical information clearly to a broad variety of people, both in person and on the telephone. Maintains clinical competence in delivering patient care in the specialty area.

    Ability to be trained in the use of specialized medical equipment and procedures. Knowledge of applicable billing practices for PA services.
  • Candidates should meet legal requirements to practice as a PA as determined by graduation from an approved training program, be certified by the appropriate medical board, and adhere to privacy, confidentiality, and security policies related to PHI or other sensitive information.
