Total Negotiated Salary (TNS) calculation includes AAMC salary benchmarks which can range from $154,700 - $405,900. The posted UC Salary Scales set the base pay determined by rank and/or step s position includes membership in the Health Sciences Compensation Plan, which provides for eligibility for additional compensation.

Position description

The Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of California, Irvine - School of Medicine invites applications for the position of Medical Physicist. This appointment will be in all ranks in the Health Sciences Clinical Professor series. Successful candidates will establish and maintain a robust quality and safety program and facilitate resultant process improvements, driven by data. This position is responsible for teaching residents and students and promoting educational activities including the physics residency and dosimetry training programs.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent in Medical Physics or related fields and have clinical experience in clinical Medical Physics. Successful candidates must be a leader in the field through demonstrated research, teaching, and innovation. This role reports directly to the Vice Chair of Medical Physics, and the Chair of Radiation Oncology. Successful candidates must work collaboratively within and outside of the Department.

  • Primary responsibilities include:
    • Oversee all required quality assurance (QA) and ensure inspections, calibrations and verifications are performed to maintain compliance with radiation regulations at federal, state, NRC, and Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Programs.
    • Represent the Radiation Oncology Department on Hospital Leadership committees about quality, safety, and performance improvement.
    • Develop, grow, and sustain a program within the Department centered around patient safety, process improvement, professional outcome assessment, and patient satisfaction.
    • Instill a culture of safety and quality throughout the Department and make QA a centerpiece.
    • Monitor, participate in, and facilitate clinical operations safety programs, including radiation safety, universal protocol, and Joint Commission requirements.
    • Establish compliance with National Patient Safety Goals (NPSG) through policy formulation, implementation, and regular review and upgrading of departmental policies in all areas of patient safety.
    • Establish a program of walk rounds for real-time assessment of safety and quality issues.
    • Manage reporting of, and responses to, adverse events in Radiation Oncology, and reduce risks by analyzing reported and potential adverse events and near misses.
    • Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) related to patient safety, service access, and customer satisfaction, focusing on safety issues such as patient identification, procedural complications, radiation exposure, and technical errors.
    • Develop mechanisms for collecting underlying data needed to measure KPIs, and tools to generate KPIs in an actionable timeframe, including a quality scorecard for each working group within the Department.
    • Prepare the Department to gain American College of Radiology (ACR or APEX) accreditation status and assist in site visits by regulatory and accreditation bodies.

Criteria for the Health Sciences Clinical Professor Series: The incumbent will be expected to direct patient care; teach residents and medical students; participate in research and creative work; and perform public and University service.

Located across UC Irvine Chao Family Cancer Centers locations, the Department of Radiation Oncology is part of the NCI-designated Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. The Department has a four-year Radiation Oncology residency and a two-year Medical Physics residency, with active Radiation Biology Division and NIH-funded programs. The Department participates in NRG/RTOG and SWOG and engages in investigator-initiated trials. Site expansion plans are ongoing.
