UC Irvine's Department of Surgery faculty members have expertise in multiple complex diseases and are integrated to subspecialties including cancer, gastrointestinal disease, vascular diseases cardiovascular diseases, hepatobiliary disease, trauma and surgical critical care.

Your Role on the Team

The position of Nurse Practitioner I in the Department of Surgery requires a highly competent, independent yet team‑oriented individual who will be immersed in the management and coordination of all inpatient care for the various divisions of the department of surgery, including Trauma and Acute Care Surgery Service.

Duties include, but are not limited to, assessing health needs; planning and evaluating care of all patients on the general surgery services as well as patients in the surgical intensive care unit; participating in inpatient sign‑out at the beginning and end of shift; following up with the General Surgery teams/residents/attending physicians; being involved in trauma resuscitations and performing surgical consultations on potential general surgery patients;

and responsible for the care and organization of procedures (including scheduling operations, interventional procedures, etc.), follow‑up, obtaining consults as needed, and discharging patients (including discharge summary, instructions, and medications) when appropriate. Responsibilities also include triage phone calls, reviewing critical labs, following up on results with patients and medical staff, obtaining comprehensive medical histories, performing initial and periodic physical examinations/assessments, and exploring patients’ interpretations of health needs.

The incumbent will identify and treat patients and manage the treatment of hospitalized patients.

The NP demonstrates an advanced level of medical knowledge, clinical/technical competence, sound clinical judgment, professional communication skills, timely and compliant documentation, and is responsible for professional development and competency validation. Under the supervision of the Chief of Trauma, Burns, and Critical Care Services and guided by applicable policies and procedures, the Nurse Practitioner will participate in the comprehensive care of patients in the ambulatory or inpatient settings and provide multidisciplinary care coordination, treatment, education, monitoring, and communication with patients and referring physicians.

An NP is an Advanced Practice Provider who possesses the advanced education, knowledge, clinical skills and experience necessary to provide advanced nursing care in their area of specialization.

What It Takes to be Successful

Required:

  • Current, active, unrestricted California Registered Nurse license.
  • Current, active, unrestricted California Nurse Practitioner license.
  • Current, active, unrestricted furnishing license and DEA registration.
  • Active National Provider Identifier (NPI).
  • NP National Board Certification (Beginning February 2018):
    Adult Gerontology Acute Care AGACNP-BC or ACNPC-AG
  • Current BLS and ACLS certification.
  • Within six months of hire, ATLS certification.
  • PALS certification.
  • Ability to obtain UCIMC Allied Health Professional Privileges prior to hire.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the program and UCI Health System.
  • Ability to exercise diplomacy and flexibility in interacting with physicians, nurses, other paramedical personnel, administrators, emergency and law enforcement officers.
