Position: Public Safety Officer II (Certified)

Purpose Of Classification

The purpose of this classification is to perform law enforcement duties for the City. Incumbents in this classification have completed all classroom and field training requirements and are expected to function in the capacity of a fully trained Public Safety Officer operating independently without direct oversight from a training officer.

Essential Functions
  • Respond to emergency calls for fire suppression, medical assistance, and other emergency situations: respond to instructions from dispatcher; suppress, control, and extinguish fires; perform search, rescue, extrication of victims, and forcible entries; administer basic first aid and medical treatment; exercise control of emergency situations until relieved by a superior officer.
  • Detect and deter criminal activity: patrol designated areas; respond to calls relayed by dispatchers; write citations; apprehend, arrest, and process criminals, fugitives, and offenders; provide assistance and backup support to other officers and agencies as necessary.
  • Perform preliminary investigations: interview victims, complainants, and witnesses, take statements, gather information and evidence, secure crime scenes, prepare investigative reports and sketches, participate in court activities, and testify in judicial proceedings.
  • Perform related fire suppression and law enforcement duties: monitor and respond to hazardous materials incidents, motor vehicle accidents, natural disasters, investigate accidents and reported crimes, conduct searches for missing persons, victims, witnesses, and defendants, assist people from burning buildings, pursue fleeing and subduing suspects, establish openings in buildings, perform salvage and clean‑up activities after fires, and process and transport prisoners.
  • Maintain a state of readiness/preparation for emergency response: follow safety procedures, utilize safety equipment, monitor work environment to ensure safety, check and maintain stock of equipment and supplies, reload equipment and apparatus after response, assist in preparing apparatus for subsequent emergencies, and report faulty equipment for maintenance.
  • Attend shift meetings, training sessions and seminars; participate in physical fitness training, training drills, continuing education activities; maintain awareness of new equipment, procedures, trends, and advances in the profession.
  • Participate in fire prevention and other fire education activities: conduct fire safety programs, apparatus displays, skills demonstrations, tours of fire station and fire trucks, and community events and fundraisers.
  • Process a variety of documentation: receive and review documentation, complete, forward or retain as appropriate; prepare or complete forms, reports, correspondence; compile data for further processing; maintain computerized and/or hardcopy records.
  • Operate a business computer or other equipment to enter, retrieve, review or modify data; operate general office or other equipment as necessary.
  • Operate or use various equipment associated with fire suppression and law enforcement.
  • Communicate with supervisors, other employees, the public, and others to coordinate work activities, review status, exchange information, or resolve problems.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED required, supplemented by vocational or technical training in criminal justice, supplemented by minimum one year of law enforcement, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Specific License or Certification Required

Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina driver’s license. Must possess and maintain Police Officer Class I certifications.

Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in performance of the essential functions and learn, comprehend, and apply all City or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position.
