Overview
HVAC Service Tech at MUSC Health. Under general supervision, the incumbent performs skilled trades related to heating, air conditioning and refrigeration, makes routine repairs, answers trouble calls, analyzes problems, and takes corrective action. Repairs, maintains, and installs refrigeration, cooling and air conditioning equipment for the hospital.
Responsibilities- Perform skilled craftsman level trades related to heating, air conditioning and refrigeration.
- Make routine repairs, respond to trouble calls, analyze problems, and execute actions necessary to correct mechanical and electrical issues.
- Participate in outages when one or more employees are needed to complete a task.
- Repair, maintain, and install associated refrigeration, cooling and air conditioning equipment for the hospital.
- Ensure EPA and other regulatory guidelines are followed; EPA Universal Certification required; ensure there are no unauthorized gas leaks or releases.
- On a rotating basis, be on call for one week and work a weekend scheduled shift; incumbent is considered Essential Personnel in a disaster.

Incumbent will monitor, maintain, adjust, and repair building HVAC systems owned or leased by the Medical University of South Carolina to ensure safety, environmental control and economy of mechanical and electrical systems. Should have working knowledge of HVAC systems including chillers, AHU, drives, motors, pumps and refrigeration units. The incumbent will be on a rotating on-call schedule and weekend shift; incumbent is considered Essential Personnel in a disaster.
Inspects and operates refrigeration, cooling and air conditioning systems and equipment to ensure proper functioning. Installs new equipment and systems; repairs and maintains current equipment and systems.
Monitors and inspects work to ensure compliance with codes and regulations. Maintains and performs preventive maintenance inspections according to schedule. Documents maintenance, inspections and services performed.
Assesses facilities risk for safety and informs management of potential risks. Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Qualifications- High School Diploma. Building Code, National Fire Code, Joint Commission Education, and/or certification in a related field preferred. Refrigerant and CFC certification preferred.
- Plant equipment management and related healthcare experience desirable. Five years of commercial HVAC equipment installations and systems operations experience preferred.
- Ability to read and interpret manuals, procedures or regulations. Ability to write reports and manuals. Ability to present information and respond to questions from groups, patients, employees and medical staff.
- Ability to perform basic math; define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to work with concrete and abstract concepts and interpret verbal, nonverbal and written instructions.
Physical requirements include the ability to lift and carry 50 lbs unassisted, work in temperature extremes, climb stairs, work in confined spaces, and perform repetitive hand and arm motions. Must have good vision and hearing, and be able to work rotating shifts and overtime as required. Ability to work in a latex-safe environment and qualify physically for respirator use where required.
Selected positions require maintaining olfactory function.
